All of the above reinforces the idea that we must see what MakeMKV thinks of drive model "X"...

Manufacturers are changing internals without changing model numbers. A BW-16D1X-U from 2020 is a different beast from a 2015 model, and maybe even a 2016, but you cannot tell from the label OUTSIDE.

The flashing tool would not open unless I ran it as an administrator. The Asus firmware would not flash onto the drive. I ended up using the WH16NS60 1.02 firmware and it worked like a champ. Libre mode is enabled and I'm ripping 4K discs! Also, currently ripping Solo: A Star Wars Story with no problems!
Win 10 has been know to do that. Glad you got it sorted.

Was it required to use the "enc" option to flash this drive? This is an important piece of information.

I do not recall seeing nor selecting an ENC option.

If "enc" for encrypted was not required I just don't understand why you couldn't flash the other firmware. Makes no sense.

I honestly couldn't tell you. I'm just glad it worked.

We have ro be more analytic when the next drive of this type comes again. Just to be clear how to handle flashing it in the guides.

I just got an ASUS BW-16D1X-U. It appears my unit (see attached image 1) is similar to the one @KlatuVerataNikto successfully flashed:

I couldn't get the drive to flash on my Mac. Admittedly, I'm not great in terminal. Even copying and pasting the commands from the step by step thread did not work for me.
I busted out my old windows laptop running Windows 10. I downloaded and used the flashing tool. The flashing tool would not open unless I ran it as an administrator. The Asus firmware would not flash onto the drive. I ended up using the WH16NS60 1.02 firmware and it worked like a champ. Libre mode is enabled and I'm ripping 4K discs! Also, currently ripping Solo: A Star Wars Story with no problems!
...So I'm here now about to follow his footsteps but I'm not clear on what flashing tool he used...if someone wants to take this opportunity to document the steps for this device. I'd be happy to help...

I would recommend the makemkv built in flash tool with the sdf gui from Marty.

I'm assuming from the firmware date you do not need the enc box checked
So first I would try asus 3.10mk

Thanks for response!

In the mean time I opened up my unit to confirm the hard drive model, and it is the BH50N (See attached image 2)

So based on your suggestion this is what I think I need to do:
1.Download the MK Firmware pack and extract to local folder
2.Download the sdftool flasher tool Extract to local folder
3.run sdftool.exe
4. Select "Read" to dump /save backup of current firmware
5. Select "Write" Choose firmware from MK Firmware pack
(ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin)

...Also do you think I need to install any of the software on the disc that came with my external hard drive before or after I flash the new firmware? (See attached image_3)

Thanks...Should I use the firmware file from "The all you need firmware pack" rather than the "MK Firmware pack"? Just wondering if the files are different even though the name is the same... The file I'm specifically looking at is the ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin
