MakeMKV cannot convert some DVDs that DVDFab Ripper can

Post by heavy » Fri Feb 04, 2011 9:01 pm

I raised this issue on my last message on the follow thread, but never received a reply:

http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2334

The main issue is that I have DVDs that either won't copy at all with MakeMKV or the resulting MKV file has little hiccups in its playback, but these same DVDs can be copied with DVDFab DVD Ripper. I already paided for MakeMKV and would like to support it, since it works on Mac and Linux. I don't normally use Windows, nor do I want to, so I'd like to avoid DVDFab (and it has its own issues).

Any suggestions of how I can help to get these issues addressed in MakeMKV?

Mike has not yet released a new version of MakeMKV, if he hasn't requested more information from you in the other thread then we have to wait.

Also, your thread title is HUGELY inappropriate for a products forums.
Home Theater PC: Assassin HTPC, XBMCbuntu 12.0 (Frodo), Intel i5 3570k 3.4 GHz Ivy Bridge w/ HD 4000, LG BD-ROM
Playback Devices: Mede8er MED600X3D, MyGica EnjoyTV 120, Xtreamer SideWinder 3, Crystal Acoustics MediaMatchBox

@heavy

From your earlier thread - You said:
After a closer inspection, it seems that DVD playback (under Linux) does suffer from at least one flaw during the opening credits
This would indicate that the problem you've described is (at least regarding that specific DVD), as the health insurance companies in the U.S. are wont to say, the result of a previously existing condition - prior to using MakeMKV...

Well, you've provided all information and obviously this error will be corrected. It's very likely that 1.6.4 will still have this error and it's also likely that next version will not. I can't provide any more details.

I don't see how it is inappropriate. It is a statement of fact. The point being that other responses seemed to indicate it was the fault of the disc, but if another program can do it, then it doesn't appear so. Of course, this is only anecdotal evidence.

I don't think the developers will worry about direct comparisons to another program. Especially, since I am a paying user of MakeMKV and trying to help improve it. I prefer MakeMKV and as I mentioned DVDFab has other issues.

Not sure I understand your point. The point I am trying to make is this same DVD that appears to be problematic was ripped correctly with DVDFab Ripper. I am just hoping to get MakeMKV working as well as it.

Ok, great. Thanks. I'll look forward to the new release.
