Question about audio and commentary

#1 Post by memig000 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 1:43 am

I have read through the board here and almost every response to this issue has been to make sure you are choosing the correct audio so you do not get the commentary. However, my question is slightly different. I am ripping these movies to make a personal Plex Server. Will the Plex server or any other player for that matter give me the ability to choose the different audio tracks? When i play back through Window media and I select 5.1 DTS Surround or 7.1 DTS Surround, it jumps to the 2 Channel Stereo track which has, not only the commentary, but the narrative for the hearing impaired. When I only select the 7.1 or 5.1 for ripping, i got no audio at all and there are only those three choices. This has, so far, only happened with my Blu Ray Discs, I am hoping, when the movies playback from the server, the program, plex or whatever, will choose the better audio to play, rendering this question moot, and that this is just a windows media issue. I am only half way through ripping my collection, which I have been working on for almost three weeks now, and would hate to have to re-rip some of them.

Here are the selections I have. any help is appreciated! Thanks,

In Plex on a movie's details screen, you can pick the default audio track you want to use. https://support.plex.tv/articles/20246 ... m-details/ It'll look like this:

The names of the audio tracks ("Director Commentary" for example) come from track's title in the .mkv file. You'll probably have to enter this data into MakeMKV before the .mkv file is made or add it later using mkvpropedit (https://mkvtoolnix.download/doc/mkvpropedit.html) or similar tool.

As far as I'm aware, most Plex clients generally allow for picking an audio track during playback as well. For example, a movie would probably be set to default to the 'normal' multichannel audio track, but if you watch the movie and want to listen to a commentary track, you could pick it on the client just after you start the movie.

You might also consider using a different player on your computer like MPV (https://mpv.io) or VLC (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/).
