So what are the thoughts on what this professional videographer says about maintaining dynamic metadata (DV, HDR10+, etc.) when digitizing your UHD Bluray collection using mkv? It starts about the 11:52 mark:

The statement is incorrect, UHD BD does not include metadata as XML.HarperVision wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 10:46 amSo what are the thoughts on what this professional videographer says about maintaining dynamic metadata (DV, HDR10+, etc.) when digitizing your UHD Bluray collection using mkv? It's encoded in the base HDR10 layer (for HDR10+) or in the separate HEVC stream (EL layer) for Dolby Vision.
The separate HEVC stream is already in sync with the base layer, so that decoders can decode both at the same time.
Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
I'm not following. All I see is screenshots of the madVR OSD (so how does that pertain to an X700?). Plus, madVR is converting HDR to SDR in every screenshot.RESET_9999 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 03, 2021 2:48 pmyep, I still have hope but not much after reading the latest comments here
this player is amazing in my opinion. I read that it is sometimes buggy with disc playback but from my experience with file playback via USB, it's 100% stable/reliable.
last night I found another great thing this player can do: If you connect an HDR10 only TV and play a dual-layer DV TS file, the x700 is somehow tonemapping FEL with dynamic metadata to HDR10. I knew this worked for p5 files but it's very surprising that it also works with profile 7 DV FEL/MEL.

They are captured from the x700 & then displayed using mad-VR
Mad vr says sdr bc the capture is in PQ2084
So u can see what the x700 is outputting to your uhdTV more closely, p5,p7,p8, fel ect
X700 using the fel while playing HDR more to the point.
In other words Power rangers ending credits now play in bright white while playing hdr10 original disc.
Doblyvision attributes in hdr10.

Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
mmm... don't you see the x700 OSD here: https://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/12510 , if it was fake DV or regular HDR10, it wouldn't be bright white but dark grey as the BL is.
I uploaded my x700 capture clip of the fel sample from AVSforum which clearly proves that the x700 is able to use dynamic metadata + 12bit enhancement and tonemap it to any HDR10 display, just like the vertex 2 has been doing for a while.
all those screenshots are PQ captures of the x700 decoding FEL DV / tonemapping it to HDR10. So thanks to this x700 capability and as manix said, I can capture a ''difference'' between FEL, MEL, and HDR10. still not a true 12bit vs 10bit comparison but much better and more accurate than the dslr camera comparisons. In other words, I'm kind of hardcoding the dynamic metadata and FEL into a static HDR10 stream. Just like manix does with his atomos shogun (except that he can do it with any input device.)
I do the comparisons in SDR with identical madVR settings because it shows more the difference and It looks better with colors instead of colorless PQ images.
yes I think so.
Sorry for my English.

Would you do similar experiment, what happens when you convert hdr10 to DV on the fly?

Personally I only interested in the hdr10 to DV upconversion feature whether it's worth the hassle or not (it only works from mp4/ts, not mkv, and has a bug with hdr10+).Manixx2020beyound wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 10:29 amAny pitular movie hopefully something that’s both sdr/hdr/dv
So we can compare the sdr bd version with the original dv if it’s fel huge diff I soposed compare to the bd.

Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
I can't do that comparison myself because my capture device doesn't support DV but Manix with his Atomos Shogun can do that. Could be interesting to see how it looks compared to HDR10 and also compared to FEL DV.
But from my experience with it, it behaves like dynamic tone mapping options on my LG OLED. It makes the image brighter or darker, I prefer untouched HDR10 passthrough.

Perhaps he’s confusing it with the RPU?quietvoid wrote:The statement is incorrect, UHD BD does not include metadata as XML.HarperVision wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 10:46 amSo what are the thoughts on what this professional videographer says about maintaining dynamic metadata (DV, HDR10+, etc.) when digitizing your UHD Bluray collection using mkv? Can you please explain further the bolded above, or share some links? Thanks!RESET_9999 wrote: In other words, I'm kind of hardcoding the dynamic metadata and FEL into a static HDR10 stream. Just like manix does with his atomos shogun (except that he can do it with any input device.)
Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
The RPU is contained in the second video track as well.
In the original audio (in French), only XML is mentioned as being part of the original disc image outside of the video/m2ts. Which is false.

Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
The Atomos shogun is a device that can monitor and record HDR (DV and HDR10). So once it receives any decoded DV signal (LLDV), it can capture/analyze it.HarperVision wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:11 pmCan you please explain further the bolded above, or share some links? Thanks!

I can't do that with my low-end capture card because unlike the shogun, it's not seen as a DV-compatible device so once my capture card is in the chain, I lose every option related to DV.

Fake DV vs Real HDR10: https://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/12710
Real DV (p5 web) vs Real HDR10: https://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/12712
As you can see, it just brightens the image. I wouldn't recommend using the x700 HDR10/SDR to DV on the fly conversion.

Re: Dolby Vision now possible through MP4 Mux.
unfortunately, after a couple of tests on my projector, the x700 DV FEL tone mapping to HDR10 is not really good for watching DV movies: it seems to mess up the black level.
