True HD Extraction and WD TV Live

Post by jdonshik »

The program works very nicely and quickly for my BD movies. I recently used MakeMkv .11 (OSX) to extract Batman Returns. I selected the True HD stream. File completed without error. When I play it on the WD TV Live (Drobo connected to Mac Pro) streaming over Gb ethernet (all wired), the WD TV Live says that the TrueHD stream is unsupported audio format. It does play the core stream as Dolby Digital without problem.

If I use Any DVD/HD to rip an .iso of the disk, then use Clown BD to extract the main title set with True HD audio, and save it as .m2ts, the file plays with audio recognized by WD TV Live as True HD.

WD TV Live connects to my Pioneer Elite receiver (capable of on board decoding of all BD codecs), via HDMI.

Any thoughts?

No WDTV Live can only do SMB/CIFS network and USB local drive and network DNLA. No http streaming. Although I had too much trouble with DNLA as I had to reindex the database constantly so gave up on that idea.

MakeMKV has a built-in UPnP server, and was tested with WDTV live. You should be able to stream directly from MakeMKV to WDTV live.

My guess would be that it's because the TrueHD track in the mkv does not contain the AC3 core - it is simply .thd and the .ac3 core is saved as a separate track - in .m2ts files it is saved as .thd+ac3 just like it would be on the disc.

As far as I know, there is only one muxer which can handle .thd+ac3 inside mkv's - it's called SMMMatroska muxer, and atm can only be used by building a graph in GraphStudio.

Recently went through this question myself.

WDTV does not support TrueHD in MKV container. Only in M2TS as you've found out. Its not a problem with MKV or a bug with MakeMKV's process, its the WDTV Live limitation.
