Looking at buying LG WH16NS60

#1 Post by bradwiggo » Wed Mar 10, 2021 6:14 pm

I'm looking at getting a LG WH16NS60 on eBay. Is it guaranteed to be able to be flashed with the firmware to allow it to rip 4k discs? I have read about the "drive platform" needing to be a certain one?

yep that's where I found the bit about the drive platform.

"2. Drive Platform MT1959<Most important"

Are you guaranteed to get that platform if you buy one of these drives though? Do all new ones have it.

Drives manufactured after ~Oct 2015 should have 'Drive Platform MT1959'. However, there's a small chance you could get a unit from "old stock", unless you specifically ask & can get that assurance from the seller, in advance. YMMV

Buying from one of the vendors here guarantees you a pre-flashed/tested drive... but you may not get the price you see on ebay.

If you can see the date on the drive and it's after 2015 does that mean it would be a guarantee, or is there still a chance it could be the wrong platform?

Also does this apply to the "40" as well as the "60"? (i.e. this one https://smile.amazon.co.uk/LG-Electroni ... 86&sr=8-10)

LG drives. 2016+ (SVC NS50/51 on physical label) would be fine. As to "guarantee", that's between you & the specific seller... IF you ask in advance (& choose to believe them). If you require a worthwhile guarantee, the 'local' sellers are the logical choice. IMO asmcom (Robin IIRC?) in UK... on eBay, too.
