LG BH16NS55 flaky 4K UHD reading

Post by krzaku »

I just bought a used LG BH16NS55, manufactured in 2018 with firmware version 1.03. I flashed with the following command:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>makemkvcon64.exe f -d D: rawflash -i "C:\Users\bartek\Downloads\The all you need firmware pack\LG 5.25 desktop\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin"

Reading input file C:\Users\bartek\Downloads\The all you need firmware pack\LG 5.25 desktop\HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__BH16NS55_1.03_211711201704_----
Ready to write drive flash memory.
Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort
yes
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive
 100% Operation finished
Operation started: Programming flash
 100% Operation finished

Program Flash NG 06/29/00

Command produced error code 0x8f062900
Notice the error at the end. Even though there was an error, MakeMKV shows the drive was indeed flashed:

Code: Select all

The issue is, it's having a hard time reading some 4K discs. At the moment I only own 3 4K UHD discs. The drive only reads one of them. For the other 2 it's making a sound every few seconds a few times before failing to read. The one it reads, it reads it every time. Funny thing is, all the discs are part of the same pack, the new 4K Back to the Future release, it's only reading the second part. It reads regular CDs and Blurays just fine. Should I just replace the drive or am I doing something wrong? Are cleaning discs still a thing and should I use one?

Thanks in advance.

They are brand new and sprakling clean. I found this topic: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=16832 where it says "Some LG drives have trouble reading certain UHD media" and recommends the Asus BW-16D1HT, I think I'm going to switch. Unless anybody has any other ideas?

You found the topic on LG drives, but apparently didn't find the topic about how "brand new and sprakling clean" can have a chemical layer on them from their packaging that makes it necessary to clean disks before use.

No need to be passive aggressive. There's a lot of topics here and I don't even know what to search first. This is my first drive in years, possibly this decade (not counting 2021). Thanks for the advice, however cleaning the discs did not fix the issue. The drive loaded 1 of the 2 discs that did not work previously, but only once, I couldn't get it to read any of them again afterwards. I guess the drive is junk then.

Does anyone have any idea how to get back to factory firmware? I found this one: N1.03_BH16NS55_171120_only_NOBJ.exe but starting it shows a "no atapi devices found" error. I also tried flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BH16NS55_1.02.bin I found online, and tried patching it using the same method as the MK firmware but I'm getting an error as well:

Code: Select all

C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV>makemkvcon64.exe f -d D: rawflash -i C:\Users\bartek\Downloads\flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BH16NS55_1.02.bin

Reading input file C:\Users\bartek\Downloads\flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BH16NS55_1.02.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----
Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS60_1.02_211810291936_KD8I5HE4625
Ready to write drive flash memory.
Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort
yes
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive
  98% .................................................
Write DRAM NG 05/24/00

Command produced error code 0x8f052400
I couldn't find factory 1.03 in the form of an bin image file.

Before patching the unlocked firmware, I did try making a backup, but I received an information that the firmware is locked.
