Which UHD drive for UK?

Hi there,

Is there a well regarded UHD drive which MKV can work with?

I have seen some posts about an LG but that seems quite expensive in this country.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yep, I was a bit confused by that list (I had read it before I posted this thread). Some of the models mentioned there aren't available any more, plus some of the models listed don't list that they have UHD support...? Am I missing something?

This is one of the Asus models listed in that thread, however when I go onto the Amazon page or even the homepage it doesn't list UHD?

The thing about ripping UHD boils down to getting hardware that's known to work and then flashing the right firmware on to it. Anything in that list that is listed as UHD friendly means the hardware is capable, but will need the correct firmware flashed onto it. When it says UHD official, that means the factory firmware will allow UHDs.

The bit farther down about recommended firmware is a mapping of hardware to firmware. The MK designation for firmware means a firmware that has been modified to support LibreDrive (https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 19&t=18856).

From a use-with-MakeMKV perspective, there's not much difference between official or friendly drives. Sometimes people also want to use their drive to burn discs or with other ripping programs and then a little more forethought is required.

If you'd like to make things as easy as possible, there's also a list of pre-flashed drive sellers on that list. They buy a drive, flash the right firmware onto the drive, test the drive to make sure it works, and then resell it. You'll likely pay a small premium compared to what you might buy the drive yourself for, but much of the work and potential headache is removed. I think Asmcom is the UK (https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 20&t=19387), which I think probably makes things simpler.
