older BW-16D1ht

I am new here and a noob on top of it. So if I am posting in the wrong place or asking the wrong questions kindly say so or move my post to the proper location.

On to the questions. Asus BW-161HT drive bought towards the end of 2015 or early 2016. The firmware is revision 1.01. Is there any benefit to upgrading?
Is it possible to find out if the rest of the mods on this site can be used without tearing the drive out and starting over?
I use the drive in a Mythtv setup. Some disks play without other effort others require VLC to play them. Will changing things make this less likely?

What does MakeMKV say about it when you open it? The LibreDrive section of the info window will tell you the main part of what you're asking.

If it says LD is active, you really don't need to do any more.

Please pay attention to and take the time to read the guides/info posts/stickie posts across the forum, including the warnings noted within. They are there to try and answer these common questions and help avoid problems prior to taking such actions. We can’t stress this enough. You can start here:

In very short, if you flash that drive with any firmware listed on this site you will brick the drive. Read that guide and buy a newer compatible drive if you wish to have UHD BD support.

Forum search will return many more discussion on that drive, its several revisions, and why older models/revisions of that same drive (like the one you have) will not work with UHD BDs if you wish to inform yourself more, as that horse has been beaten to death many times over in the past 3 years.

I guess you are familiar with business issues or you also came across some McKinsey analysis in your company. This applies:

Dakota tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead
horse, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in business we often
try other strategies with dead horses, including the following:

1. Buying a stronger whip.
2. Changing riders.
3. Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse."
4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses.
6. Increasing the standards to ride dead horses.
7. Appointing a tiger team to revive the dead horse.
8. Creating a training session to increase our riding ability.
9. Comparing the state of dead horses in todays environment.
10. Change the requirements declaring that "This horse is not dead."
11. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse.
12. Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed.
13. Declaring that "No horse is too dead to beat."
14. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.
15. Do a Cost Analysis study to see if contractors can ride it
cheaper.
16. Purchase a product to make dead horses run faster.
17. Declare the horse is "better, faster and cheaper" dead.
18. Form a quality circle to find uses for dead horses.
19. Revisit the performance requirements for horses.
20. Say this horse was procured with cost as an independent variable.
21. Promote the dead horse to a supervisory position.

Second reply: Questions answered but at what cost? Original poster's self esteem is just shredded, any faith he had in the kindness of fellow 4K disc ripping enthusiasts is now completely gone, much like his self esteem.

>>I felt this way in the beginning and really wished the mods here would removed. Don't worry though they'll grow on you over time, like a fungus, and you'll see they're really not bad guys, just very committed (with at least one of them having BEEN committed in his younger yeaars :)
