LG WH14NS40 Hash check failed and Read errors UHD Discs after flashing

#1 Post by spacejocky » Thu Dec 31, 2020 4:34 pm

I recently purchased a LG WH14NS40 and flashed the drive.
I did the reading, and did my best to decipher between valid and not. I flashed without any issues. Not saying I did it correctly just saying I didn't get any errors.
For completeness I used the SDF tool and I:
Stock Firmware ->
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061444 (enc checked)

then I did

HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH14NS40-NS50-1.05-NM00900-212005061444 ->
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936
After this I was able to rip several UHD discs as well as 1080p BluRay.

I am receiving errors on UHD discs about 50% of the time. I am having no issues with BluRay so far. I am pouring through my collection and have not hit any snags yet. For reference We are talking low numbers as I just flashed the drive yesterday. So 8 BD and 7 UHD 4 of which failed. I have included an example of each of the error types I am receiving. Along with a successful BD rip. It should be noted that I am more than willing to believe that this drive is malfunctioning even though it is new. I am not in denial...lol. I just want to make sure that 1) the steps given for the flashing of the drive are correct and 2) that the flashing wouldn't cause such an issue. If it might be the flashing cool no problem I can work on a solution if it is not anything the flashing might be causing then cool no problem I will RMA the drive.

TIA for your help.

Re: LG WH14NS40 Hash check failed and Read errors UHD Discs after flashing

Ripping UHDs is a tricky thing. The UHD subsection on this forum is full of posts of people having trouble ripping a UHD. The standard advice is gently clean the disc and try again.

The errors in your logs all seem to fall into the category of the drive having difficulty reading the disc.

In order to improve my odds at successfully ripping a UHD, I have two different drives (one LG and one ASUS).

I speculate that because the data density is higher on UHDs, the difficulty of reading them goes up in a non-linear way compared to a blu-ray.

So I did not mention it but I did of course wash all the discs even though they appeared pristine. The one disc did seem to have a deep(as in embedded deep in the disc itself not deep like a deep gouge) very fine incision like blemish directly in the metal, almost like a hair was mixed in with the plastic when it was stamped. Other than that all the other disks looked just fine.

Also I should clarify I did not mean the steps given for flashing are correct. Of course the steps given on the site are correct. duh
What I meant was the steps up and in the last case down in firmware. Well I guess it was more of a side step then a down...well crap, man, you know what Im saying.

It is my understanding that the guts are all the same LG and they are just rebranded. Is this not the case?
There is no “Best Drive” They are all made by LG and rebranded the drives just fit different use cases.

I have heard that all the hardware is made by LG as well. Be that as it may, discs that don't work in my LG drive almost always work in my ASUS drive. Maybe it is just the different firmware. Maybe it is the difference in age between the drives. I don't know.
