Newb. Need some baseline info for UHD errors

Post by Ownhammer » Sat Dec 19, 2020 2:48 am

So, after enjoying MakeMKV for my BluRay's without issue, my drive died. I ended up getting the Asus BW16D1HT with (I think) 3.10 firmware. Purchased from a trusted seller found on this forum. Like I said, this 4k stuff is alluring, but I'm in the dark almost entirely. I've got a couple questions.

How often are bad discs an issue? I only own 6 4k discs ATM, Avenger's, Avenger's Infinity War, Star Trek 2009, Captain America Civil War, The Hunger Games, and Star Wars Rise Of Skywalker. So far, I've only been able to successfully rip Avenger's, all others fail. All are able to be read, and I can select the main movie & audio, but nothing completes save for Avenger's. Heck, I did it twice to make sure the drive didn't have an issue after the first disc and I missed it. Most discs are used, but look clean, and I've cleaned any disc prior to inserting.

Second, can I assume a fail to successfully rip isn't the same as fail to read? As in submitting a dump isn't going to help? And how does one submit a dump? Cut & paste the results of the failed rip and send it to the email address in the post about submitting dumps?

Again, forgive my ignorance with this 4k stuff. Hard to imagine I'm the guru in my family. Any advice, clarification or tips you may feel will help will be greatly appreciated.

Dumps are for when the disc fails to open due to the decryption key not being available. You've been able to open the discs, see the titles, and start ripping, so this isn't the case for your discs. (When you try to open the disc, it will say in the log window that the volume key is unknown and that a .tgz dump has been created - it will tell you where it has saved the dump. This .tgz dump file is what you email in to svq@makemkv.com.)

For other errors, check the forum to see if someone has already made a thread for that particular movie. If they haven't, start a new thread with the title of the movie as the subject, and post MakeMKV's log from the log window showing the errors.

You may also find some general advice and information in the UHD FAQ, as well as by reading some of the other threads in the forum to see the common errors that people are encountering with trying to read UHD discs.
