Anyone have information on the correct episodes for the season? There are multiples upon multiples for each disc

Hmm, I just loaded up Disk1 today and it doesn't look like those playlists map out to my disk.

802 doesn't exist
631 and 709 are the 5 chapter 9.4 gig titles

If you notice abmcconnell skips from E07 to E09 (so safe to assume just miss-typed numbers as you have pointed out only 9 episodes not 10)

I can VERIFY, Disk 1 Season 5 of Downton Abbey is as stated.
I played each episode (Chapter by chapter) on my DVD player, each chapter start matched the chapter start of
the MakeMKV files produced..............................

I commend you on your hard work. May I inquire as to what method you used to figure this out. Surely you didn't rip every one of these playlists and watch them, ruling out the ones that play out of order.

I could be wrong but when you look at the source file names most of them have a duplicate (n) where n is some number. The ones he wrote all lack that. I didn't look at all the files but it looks like they follow this rule.

Been very thrilled to date with how MakeMKV has allowed me to setup up and use my digital library. Am fairly new to it, but have gone through 100's of DVDs this week until I ran into this with the Limited Edition Downton Abbey Seasons 1-5 PBS Blu-Ray set (Original UK Edition).I am assuming it is the Source File Name (SFN) that corresponds with the referenced numbers for the episode (see below). Unfortunately, the numbering scheme on this set is not consistent with the info provided. For example the file 457 listed here suggests it is E4, on this set it is E6 (which appears to be by far the most frequent recurring file).

Interestingly, the first 4 seasons all had only one file per episode.

I originally asked a couple of questions about resolving filename discrepancies and determining the file contents prior to having to rip the file to view it. I have since taken a clue from one of the other responders and scanned the files (using the down cursor key) to identify files that did NOT have a parenthetic number at the end (e.g. Source file name: 00887.mpls(1)). These numbers were always (1) or (2).

This method identified 7 unique files on the disk, 4 of which contained the unique episodes. This appears to be the most expedient method to at least narrow the options. Eliminated a couple of them based on size. Quit after I got the remaining files I was seeking, so I do not know what the two other files contained (4 episodes and 1 combined file). But this approach will make it easier for the disc 3 and discs of season 6. Thanks!

Interestingly, Disc 2 of season 6 contained only one file per episode, but discs 1 and 3 (Episodes 1,2,3,8,9,10) each contained over 200 files. None of the filenames on the these two season 6 discs had (n)'s appended to the end, so this method could not be utilized. Fortunately, the answer on this forum to this question about Season 6 provided the exact filenames corresponding to each episode on discs 1 & 3. Interesting phenomenon.

I'm a MakeMKV noob and could use some help...

I've bought a NAS and am happily converting all my DVDs, 118 so far no issues. Until Downton Abbey Season 5 Original UK edition. I'm having troubles on all the discs but will discuss disc 1 here.

There are 3 episodes on the disc; it plays fine with VLC media player.

MakeMKV opens the disc with 7 titles. I found that title1=E02 and title2=E01. The problem is that the rest of the titles either have tons and tons of errors, and are copies of title1.

I don't see filenames with numbers like in the thread. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

Many thanks to all the others on here who have sorted out the messy Downton Abbey Blu-Rays for Seasons 5, 6, and Bonus discs. (I think Seasons 1 - 4 were unaffected)

Recapping... The disc authors used trickery on most of these discs to overwhelm someone using a ripping tool like MakeMKV. They took one episode on each disc, took a section out of the middle, cut that into about 15 short segments, and then created maybe 50 *.mpls files, each with the segments randomly out of order. Only one of the .mpls files is the right one for an episode. Somehow your BluRay player can tell which one is the right one to play, but MakeMKV can't, so it lists maybe 200 titles to choose from. Some have used AnyDVD HD to figure out the correct files. Others have looked for patterns in the mess (like ignoring all the .mpls files with a trailing "(1)" or "(2)"). Other times, it's trial and error. If you rip the wrong file, it will play ok until it hits the section of scrambled segments, at which point the video will play scenes in the wrong order for a little while, and then it will end OK. This makes it tedious and time consuming but not impossible to rip the discs correctly. It becomes a "needle in a haystack" problem. Note that segments are much shorter than chapters. A bad version of the title might seem OK if you quickly flip through its 7 chapters. Segments are shorter (sometimes one minute or less), so a whole batch of them might only be 5-10 minutes of playback.

Below is a list of all the episodes in one place (for the next victim). Basically, you'll need to run through the LONG list of titles that MakeMVK presents. Pay attention to the Track Info window to the right. For example, Season 5 Episode 1, rip the title with source file name "00802.mpls" (or output file name ending with "t163").
