You are using a USB-powered drive, and it is not getting enough power when it spins up to maximum speed. Voltage drops, drive resets, operating system gets unhappy, and throws a tantrum (i.e., error code).

Make sure that it is plugged into a port with adequate power available. If it is NOT plugged DIRECTLY into the computer, make sure that the hub it is plugged into has external power. Hubs without their own power supply split the power they get from the computer (2.5 watts max for USB2) between accessories, and that doesn't work. Computer ports "almost always" have full specification power available, if you're using a desktop computer.

Some of these drives come with a "two head" USB cable, which is needed for high-speed applications - it should be plugged into two POWERED ports (either on the computer or on a powered hub) to run at full speed.

And no, I don't know of a setting to prevent MakeMKV from running it up to full speed.

It's plugged into a powered hub, and has been working well for a couple of years like this. I unplugged both cables, data and power, and after plugging them back in, lo and behold, it's now ripping. Thanks.
