Life Blu Ray Very Buggy

Hey everyone, I couldn't find this anywhere around so I decided to make a post about it. I have the 4 Disc set of Life (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Life-Blu-ray/10463/) and I have been trying for a while to put it on my computer. Obviously I have been using MakeMKV (to be honest it is awesome, nothing to complain about) but when I copy it, it produces a very glitchy and impossible to watch file. The file produced has boxes that kind of shutter in front of the video, although the audio is fine. So I thought, maybe it will go away with Handbrake. So I re-encoded the video and with no luck, the glitchy-ness was still there. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? It would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if it's something with the encryption or the copyright protection? I don't think it's the protection because MakeMKV says it only uses AACSv16, when I've seen much higher than that.

It's a problem with the codec the the BBC uses. They think it's really funny to use interlaced VC-1 for their blurays.

MakeMKV doesn't have a problem with ripping this. Just about everything has a problem playing it.

Alright, so would I have to de-interlace the file in Handbrake? Would that solve the problem?

Nah, HandBrake won't do interlaced VC-1 either (unless for some reason your Blu-ray was encoded without B-frames, which is unlikely).

The good news is that libavcodec should now have full support for interlaced VC-1, so as your favorite applications update to a newer libavcodec (e.g. VLC, XBMC, etc.) they will be able to play these files.

Not sure how long we'll have to wait though.

Well I was trying other software to try and get rid of it and somehow I installed a codec or something (not sure what) and Handbrake will accept the file. I did a test encode with my normal settings and the file was still buggy. I'll run another test on it tonight.

I'm sure Romansh will correct me if I'm wrong, but Handbrake does not use any external codecs for video transcoding, so nothing you install will make it work if the core libraries in Handbrake can't decode it. So there is no reason to try another test with Handbrake tonight.

However, I believe that there are two programs that can transcode interlaced VC-1. One is Staxrip, and I don't remember what the other one is.

Yeah Staxrip is one of the programs I tried before. The only reason I didn't use it was because the settings were rather confusing. If I were to use Staxrip, I would want to have it decode the file and make a lossless copy, then I would run it through Handbrake. Any ideas on what the settings would be for that?

No iDea.

However, you already have a decoded copy. Handbrake can not currently handle interlaced VC-1 no matter what you install on your system, or what you decode it with. You will have to transcode it with a different application.

Alright, thanks for the help anyway. I'll just copy Handbrake's lossless settings and transfer them to Staxrip. Let's hope that works!
