MakeMKV suddenly stopped working for Blu-ray

My method of choice was anyDVD, MakeMKV, then Handbrake to rip video for my apple TV. Been happily ripping DVDs for ages. Then I got an external USB blu-ray drive and started ripping BDs.
Everything worked fine for about a fortnight. Then MakeMKV suddenly told me Blu-ray functionality was disabled without the registration key. I registered it, but since then it has never worked at all. Doesn't matter whether I am using anydvd, DVD Fab passkey, or just letting MakeMKV decode the disc itself - nothing will rip
It is so annoying
If I use an external decoder, I get an error scsi something.
If I use MakeMKV to decode it seems to decode fine, but the resulting files wont be read by Handbrake - they give an error saying they are copy protected or otherwise unreadable
Can anyone give me any advice?
I#d be so grateful as I've been tearing my hair out for months

Please post exact error message you're getting.

Thanks for the reply. If I use direct disc access mode and then try and open the resulting files within handbrake I get the message :
No title(s) found
Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered, or in a format that Handbrake does not support
If I try and use a third party (like any dvd) to remove the copy protection and then run MakeMKV I get :
Failed to open disc
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL ATAPI DVD A DH16AASH SA15' at offset '524288'

Again thanks for the reply but the disc is fine? Well when I say it's fine, it plays in my Blu-ray player no problem. Also I don't get this error when ripping DVDs, just Blu-rays. Can it really be a knackered drive? It's brand new and still reads DVDs.

My prior BD-ROM drive just stopped reading Blurays, but it was fine with DVDs.
I even went and picked up a cleaning disc just incase it was too dirty for HD, but fine for SD. That didn't help. So it was time for a new drive.

Ok - cheers for the reply. Have emailed the supplier who responded already which impressed me. They've said it's a known issue and to clean the lens.
I will try that when I get home. I appreciate the response

Thanks. The bizarre thing. makeMKV reads the disc and tells me the title and volume etc etc.....

I've just realised I'm being stupid. That error message is from MakeMKV trying to read the DVD drive - which, of course, has no disc in it. It reads that as default when it first fires up. D'ph.
So basically, Make MKV is reading the blu-ray fine, ripping it, and then I get the error message as previously mentioned within Handbrake. So any ideas, anyone?

No iDea without a Handbrake log.
I might guess that it's a VC-1 1080i file, which is not supported by the libraries that Handbrake uses. But that's just a guess.

Bloody hell. It is! You're a genius! I had no idea that wasn't supported.
I cleaned the lens, ran a test rip of Total Recall Blu which was fine, went back to the disc I was trying to rip ("Being Human") and again I got same error.
It is a 1080i VC-1 encode so spot on.
Thank you.
I have no right to ask this on a makeMKV forum (you have answered my question) but is there anyway of getting the rips converted to iTunes to stream through my AppleTV? Happy to pay for software if needed but would rather not
Thanks again.

You're welcome.
I'm not sure what your second question is.
Shouldn't your ATV see your iTunes collection?
If that's your question, then I don't know.
or
You want to transcode your rips to be added to your iTunes collection?
If that's your question, then welcome to the world of
Handbrake. Use the ATV preset that is for your generation of ATV. Don't use the current stable release, but get the current nightly release.

Sorry I meant how to get the vc1 encode that make mkv produces into a format that handbrake understands so I can get into iTunes. ITunes won't recognise the file without conversion

I actually think that question is probably best asked in the general MKV thread so will ask there. Thanks again for your help.
