Errors - One rip to rule them all

I have 2 sets of discs blu ray Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit which I have a lot of problems ripping with MakeMKV.
There are no errors reported when ripping but the content contains the same faulty output in the same places in the movies. Re-ripping does not vary where the problems occur.
I wondered if it were the discs so bought a completely brand new set to rip. I actually bought a spanish version instead of the english, but selected the english soundtrack hoping a slight variation in production might also affect things positively.
However the problems occur in the same place in the movies.
I then bought a new blu ray drive of a different type, so now I have an asus external blu ray drive Bw-16D1x-U and a internal BW-16D1HT
Both drives produce the same issue in the same places on both editions. Again nothing reported as an error when ripping.
I do not get issues with any other films I have ripped.
So I have tried
2 different drives
2 different editions
I recently tried to do the hobbit trilogy but got the same issue, positionally fixed corruptions whichever drive I used. This time I decided against buying another set of the hobbit.
Finally I tried to use DVDFab and got the same problem.
My only conclusion is that there are common faults in LOTR/HOBBIT discs OR my drives both have an inability to read the disc content in the same location
Does anybody have similar experiences with these discs? Note I have UK versions which may be quite different to U.S pressed versions.

Both LOTR and HOBBIT box sets are well known to be notoriously bad quality pressings. There are many threads about them.

Thanks I did have a look for such grumbles but didn't find any.
Do you know if the 4k versions are just as bad?

Yeah, the 4K discs are terrible.

I had some trouble with my two ASUS (LG) drives.
Then put them in my Pioneer and all problems gone.
That's what I usually do. Have worked until now.
I have actually not have a single disc of several hundreds on
the Pioneer fail to read.
The ASUS ones have had trouble with plenty and have totally
not worked at all for about 15-20 discs.
The Pioneer is so good I bought a backup drive incase the
current one breaks.

Yeah.. But I actually got the Pionner first.
Bought an external ASUS that turned out to have a Pioneer inside
Bought a second from the same seller and got the same Pioneer inside.
The Pioneers are better at essentially everything.
Except the ASUS ones, when they can read the discs properly, are incredibly
fast at reading UHD discs. Mine have reached up to 37MB/s.
The Pioneer tops out at 17,1MB/s. The difference being the Pioneer ALWAYS
does this speed, quietly and consistantly.
The ASUS can have anything from 2MB/s to 37MB/s depending on problems
reading the discs. But usually they reach 22-28MB/s.
With regular bluray both drives have had +45MB/s reads.
Sub 10 minute rip

Correct.Be aware that LGs (not ASUS) also have a "feature" that skips hard to read sectors and so they make imperfect copies. I only use my Pioneer drives because of that.

But that must be only when watching a movie?!
I'm sure MakeMKV would complain if it didn't get all data it wanted when ripping..

LG calls it "jamless play". ASUS firmware doesn't do this as well as all Pioneers would report errors.

In your earlier comment you referred to "imperfect copies" with LG drives. How are you making those imperfect copies because MakeMKV should be detecting the silent read errors thanks to the AACS content hash table?

There are people who just enable Libredrive to beat bus encryption and then make protected ISOs using either ddrescue or Imgburn. They keep these protected ISOs and run them later trough Makemkv or other decrypting software. Only then these bad copies are detected since the LGs can add garbage data and they don't see any problems while ripping to protected ISO.

Thanks for the clarification Coopervid.
I remember on the Redfox forum someone submitted a Python script for validating disc folder backups. It would be neat to see an equivalent solution for ISO backups. It could be used to facilitate a ddrescue-type approach for correcting backups without needing a re-rip the entire disc.
