LG BE14NU40 gets disconnected at final file write time

Hi, here's the background:
LG BE14NU40 Blu-Ray Reader / Writer - external - externally powered by wall wart - USB 3 B to A cable about two feet long directly connected to desktop USB ports. Running the latest firmware.. (1.01-3)
The Blu-Ray drive works fine in general and I've burned Blu-Rays from Pinnacle.
Ripping 3D blu-rays on MakeMKV- fails > 50% of the time immediately following the "Operation successfully completed
Saving 6 titles into directory D:/Video/Movie" message. For the 3D movies I've been attempting, it typically takes about 60-80 minutes to reach this point. The log reports average read speeds of 5.5X (drive spec'd at 6X max).
Specific popup dialog - "Copy complete. 0 titles saved; 6 failed."
Specific log messages:
Operation successfully completed
Saving 6 titles into directory D:/Video/Movie
Error 'OS error - STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00800.m2ts' at offset '16783767552'
Error 'OS error - A device which does not exist was specified' occurred while reading '\Device\CdRom1' at offset '16783767552'
...
Failed to save title 0 to file D:/Video/movie/movie_t00.mkv
...
Device manager shows that the Device is no longer connected.
I switch the unit off (power switch on back) and on again and it reappears in Device Manager. Rinse/Repeat.
Error occurs many minutes (> 10) AFTER the disc has stopped spinning.
The unit is room temperature inside (disc temp) as well as case - additionally, I ran tests with the unit sitting on an ice pack - not a high temperature issue.
Not a USB hub problem - tried it in multiple direct connect USB 3.1 and 3.2 connections on my Alienware.
Not powered by USB - has dedicated power supply that came with it.
Not a USB sleep issue - I have my power profile set to never suspend USB or PCI.
It says it is using "Direct Access Mode" - I saw an earlier post saying to disable this in Preferences, but I don't have an option to disable it in Preferences.
Running version 1.18.1 on Alienware desktop, Intel10900 (not overclocked); 32 GB RAM; latest Windows 10 Pro (22H2 OS Build 19045.5854); nVidia 3080.
Any potential solutions would be greatly appreciated. I was looking forward to watching my 3D movies on my newly acquired Quest 3.
Thanks!
