(pioneer slim-drive) not reading bluray discs

Hello ,
have found this bluray drive here at home but it seem would not read any bluray disc in make-mkv.
the drive is listed pioneer bdc-ud02as from 2013.
the dvd reading is ok;
can there be done something with this drive? was interested in ripping bluray movies for home streaming;

Do you mean standard BluRays, i.e.
non-UHD disks? I would expect MakeMKV to be able to read those, provided your drive's blue laser is working.

yes, normal bluray disc won't read, not fancy uHD;
suppose it need firmware update; i am wondeirng why it wouldnt read, but if can read DVD, laser could be ok?

Your drive will use a separate red laser for DVDs. You should not need either a firmware update or LibreDrive to read an ordinary BluRay disk.

This drive is defective.
