Bluray scratches
The main problem for me is scratches. Any scratches on the blurays cause hash check errors and either fail to copy or give a %'ge of the file that is corrupt. Usually a good scratch will fail outright but light scratches, if I'm lucky, just gives me hash check errors and shows something like 2.57% corrupt 97.42% correct 99.99% checked, but it at least gives me a file that will no longer degrade hopefully.
Now in cases where it completely fails, I've used PowerISO to just copy the damn thing to an ISO file. Unfortunately when I use VLC on the ISO file and it gets to the part where the corruption is, it just stops and restarts at the beginning. If I know where that point is I can go past it just a bit and it will continue no problem but I've tried some settings, mostly default, to no avail - I don't know if there are any settings for VLC to "plow" through the corrupted spot. If anyone knows, please indulge me.
Similarly, when a disc fails to read, but no noticeable scratches it's because anydvd is outdated, however the newer xreveal helps because it uses the samekey vlc uses for playing blurays.
I have yet to try the putting the ISO to disc to see if it plays ok. But the point is not having to do that and using VLC otherwise, even though I take care of my discs, me or someone else manages to drop it, slide it (gasp) across the top of the player or just plain put it side down on the table (double gasp!)
Now when makemkv just fails completely, someone mentioned an earlier version might do better. If so, which version is best?
Any input on any questions I have would be greatly appreciated.

Get a Pioneer drive. The error correction is far better than those on LG drives.christopher2222 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 8:44 pmThe main problem for me is scratches. Re: Bluray scratches
Pioneer? Really? That's good to know. It seems LG isn't that great with scratches then? If someone can verify that?
Alternatively, I suppose I could try to "lightly" hand buff the scratch, or maybe use pledge (I'd try this first) to "fill" the scratch in a little bit (which by the way has only ever worked once for me to stop hash check errors. Currently I'm getting 5.60% corrupt, 94.38% correct 99.98% checked.
I find it odd that bluray players will play some of these scratched discs without issues but on the computer, it skips and jumps.

Re: Bluray scratches
Standalone players just skip unreadable areas. Buffing worked mainly for CDs and DVDs but is dangerous with BDs and UHDs. Just clean them with warm water and liquid soap. Dry with paper towel. Wipe with a microfiber cloth. And get a Pioneer drive. Tell me your country of residence since the retail drives can't read UHDs anymore.christopher2222 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 25, 2025 9:02 pmPioneer? Re: Bluray scratches
What current drives now can read UHD? What about the asus BW-16D1HT?
Re: Bluray scratches
Asus is OEM LG. Now you want a Pioneer drive or not? Then I need your country of residence.

Re: Bluray scratches
Thanks, for now I'll work with what I have.
Re: Bluray scratches
You are welcome. You will hit limits that your drive can't handle. Live with that and don't complain. And the future is not very bright if you don't act now.

Re: Bluray scratches
How about some of the other questions I had?
I'll try to document future findings here. I tried it with the newest makemkv on an external verbatim drive. It just stopped progressing about 1/3 in with the drive light still on. So I ran xreveal in the background to see if that would work. It removed the hash table so makemkv couldn't verify the integrity of the m2ts files. It for further but said it completed only half way through.
Next up I'm going to use pledge later on today and share my findings.

Which other questions? Please also post your Makemakv info for your Verbatim drive. It might contain a Pioneer drive. You are on Windows I assume. Is this correct?christopher2222 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 9:36 amHow about some of the other questions I had?

Re: Bluray scratches
In my original post I had questions about vlc settings, maybe no one knows here.
Windows yes, I'll have to get info from makemkv tonight.
In the meantime, any reason it would have just stopped? Probably a scratch.

Re: Bluray scratches
The external verbatim drive is indeed a pioneer.
Re: Bluray scratches
So post your Makemkv info for that drive. But I think I give up on you. No learning curve.
