First blu-ray drive. Is it just me, or does blu-ray take FOREVER compared to dvd??

mac mini m4 pro
brand new Pioneer BDR-XD08UMB-S
read 1.7x
says it's going to take 7 hours??

Is this normal?? The disc surface looks absolutely perfect.

indicate that the drive is having trouble correctly reading spots on the disc. MakeMKV will retry reads until it either gets a correct read or the retry limit is reached.

The standard advice is to gently clean the disc.

Is there anything to do if cleaning the disc doesn’t work?

The Pioneer XD08U is a high-quality drive. However, the usual steps would be:
  1. Try a different disk in your XD08U, to check whether MakeMKV can read it. (This should confirm your drive is OK.)
  2. Try the disk in a different drive, or maybe even a dedicated UHD player (if you have one).
  3. Replace the disk.
  4. Sacrifice a ripe mango to Cthulhu.

So most likely needs a thorough clean with soapy water. Brand new out of the box is when most discs need to be cleaned due to often having an invisible layer of gunk on them from the manufacturing process.
