Disc copying 12 of 14GB then getting stuck with many errors

Post by cyberrayne3000 »

I have an external USB drive powered only by USB, but this if the first disc of many I've been unable to rip. It freezes during mkv creation after about 15+ minutes, always in the same spot, after its progress reads about 12.5 of 14GB. This is a brand new disc and I've tried cleaning it. It had 1 fingerprint smudge near an edge that may or may not have been me, and some other non scratch marks I felt I cleaned. Log below:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.17.6 win(x64-release) started
Using direct disc access mode
Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.
File 00001.mpls was added as title #0
Title #00000.mpls has length of 21 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Title #00006.mpls has length of 22 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
File 00005.m2ts was added as title #1
Title #00004.m2ts has length of 94 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped

Does "same spot" mean "about the same place", or "the exact same offset"?

One issue with USB-powered devices is they can run out of power when they go near maximum speed, but it is unusual that they'd stop at the exact same offset. Your description of "freezing" could be that the drive powered down, or it could simply be that it is retrying the read.

I think it's gotten stuck at the exact same offset. Is that some imperfection in the disc? It does play in my actual blu ray player that's hooked to my TV, but I know MakeMKV needs access to everything to rip. I don't think the drive is powering down, it stops copying at the same 12.5GB mark when it's nearly done, then spits out all the errors as posted.

Same offset usually means a disk defect. Whether that's dirt or an actual imperfection can't be determined remotely.

This is where cleaning is the key - what method did you use for cleaning? "Dusting" is the least invasive, but you're limited to the chemicals you want to involve. A lot of disks get contaminated by chemicals in their packaging leaving a film that covers the entire disk, but it would be unusual for that to concentrate itself at one point on said disk.

I typically use water-based furniture polish ("Lemon Pledge"), but I haven't done a lot of UHD stuff, other than testing. Polish is good for scratches, but less-good for general dirt.

Hopefully, others will post their cleaning methods they've used.

Liquid soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel. Wipe with a microfiber cloth as used for cleaning glasses.

There is a narrow mark on the disc about 3-4 inches long near an edge. At first I thought it was a hair, but I think it's some kind of scratch. Could be the culprit. I'll attempt more cleaning though, I only tried dry so far, and report back.
