Issues with Shawscope, Vol. 1 discs

Having trouble with almost all of the discs in the Shawscope, Vol. 1 collection. The first 3 discs all failed, late in the process. I was able to rip the first movie from disc 4 but not the second, also failing near the end. Then the fifth disc failed at the end too (1 minute left in the process).

To test the drive (WH16NS60) I ripped 2 other movies I already owned and they worked fine. The discs are basically spotless but I've tried cleaning them anyway, to no avail.

Specifically, I'm getting

HARDWARE ERROR: LOGICAL UNIT HAS NOT SELF-CONFIGURED YET

The drive is in an external enclosure and I've tried powering it off and my PC and that hasn't helped either. Should note that the speed gets up to 7.1x at the end. It starts at around 3.6x.
