Issues with Johnny Got His Gun (1971) (Viavision/Imprint)

Post by ds1972 »

This is a strange one, and not specifically about MakeMKV...

I've tested this on two different copies of this disc (an Australian import), as well as two different drives, with the same results on both. In both cases, the disc keeps trying to spin up, but finally gives up without successfully mounting it. It just spins down and ejects the disc. Both disc work fine on a standalone A/V component Blu-ray player (probably one of the cheapest possible decks you can buy). Both drives are fine with any other disc.

DISC
TITLE: Johnny Got His Gun (1971)
LABEL: Imprint/Viavision
CATALOG NUMBER: 115
UPC: 9337369029085

DRIVES
#1: BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BP50NB40 1.03 SIM21M1PI2702
#2: BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.04 MOEL3395805

OS
MacOS 12.3 (also tested on 13.0, with the same results, but as a beta, no expectations there)

Just curious is anyone has had a similar issue, and has any advice.

Thanks!

clean the disc with a damp very soft cloth and buff dry with another.

Yup, have tried this with both discs (microfiber for both passes). Definitely not a cleaning issue.

Just received the Imprint Zhang Yimou / Gong Li box set, and exactly the same issue. Speaking with Imprint support (who were dismissive), they hinted that there is "encryption" that "may" prevent it from playing. So my guess is this is intentional, and likely affects all Imprint discs.

Does anyone have any success with Imprint discs? If so, could you please post what drive you're using?
