The last couple BR disks I have used MKV on have yielded ,among smaller files, 2 large files which are exactly the same size and neither will play. Is this a new type of "protection" ? Any remedies? Thanks!

What do you define as large?

And which files are they? from the streams folder (aka m2ts files) or from somewhere else?

Are these files duplicated on a full backup or after you created MKV files from the BluRay?

Sorry didn't realize it was so vague...... anyway..... duplicate large files after using MKV on the disk.... large is 32 / 34 GB. Various other files that you usually see when using MKV, things like interviews, etc... ancillary files. But 2 LARGE files which appear to be the main, movie file.

More often I see the main movie having two playlists whereas the second playlist only has the original language (e.g. English) and one foreign language, usually Japanese.

Though that you can't play them is strange. What does MediaInfo tell about these files?

Thanks for your time with this. Wish I had the error message in front of me but it is the usual listing of what it has done and then it says something like "error" 0 files saved. Yet there is a file, but it won't play. So strange.

I'm afraid the best thing would be to have the MakeMKV log (with Log debug messages enabled in the Preferences -> General).

So to make fully sure you would need to rip it again and copy the whole log here.

Ended up with two 39.1 GB files and a few ancillary ones
Ran one of the 39.1 GB files on Handbrake but it could not read it.

That means the optical drive was unable to correctly read the disc. Blu-ray players will generally plow ahead when there are read failures and hope you don't notice a tiny messed up bit of the movie. MakeMKV, on the other hand, will not skip over read failures; it is trying to make an exact, correct copy of the disc. The short answer is try gently cleaning the disc and/or try a different optical drive.
