MakeMKV successfully reading blu-ray, fails ripping, then disk cannot be read again.

Post by lily9886 »

Hello,
This is not a drive or broken disc issue as the disk is brand new and the drive can rip other disks fine. It just has issues with this disc. Im using LG - 8x External USB 2.0 Blu-ray Disc Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Disc Rewriter - Black.

Here is one log
MakeMKV v1.16.5 win(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as C:\Users\lily/MakeMKV_log.txt

udf: node fe/efe failed!

Here is the info it can read

When I first put the disk in it read quickly and was able to open the disk and read the separate videos, chapters etc. When I tried ripping one 10 gb file it could not start and didnt rip at all. Now the disk cant even be read? It takes forever to read and I cannot view the video files or chapters anymore. Cant even open the folders of the disc in file explorer.
I've ripped other movies up to 26 gb so It must be an issue with this blu ray.
Has the disc been ruined now? as it was reading fine the first time I put it in.

Thank you for any help or insight.

Try rebooting your computer and completely unplugging/removing power from your optical drive.

There's a tiny computer inside your optical drive that runs the drive's firmware. Sometimes it gets in a weird state and the drive doesn't seem to work. The only real way to reboot that tiny computer is to remove power from the drive. If your drive is powered by USB, then unplugging it for a few moments should do it. If it has an external power supply, disconnect the power supply.

After that, if some discs work but others don't, then it is probably time to try cleaning the problematic discs.
If you're experiencing rip errors, please read here first!

most times on usb drives this means its not getting enough power use both plugs if available or buy a high pored USB hub like this: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... VXLJ&psc=1
i use it to test 4+ drives at a time if it can power those no issue it will power your one

Thank you for your explanation! I will try picking up one of those soon. The disc I'm inserting is part of a 2 disc special. Funnily enough my drive was completely fine reading & ripping the first larger 39 gb disc from the blu ray I bought. I only rip every once and a while for personal use so sadly I cant test it on a more powerful internal drive. Will continue investigating.
