Weird Artifacting in Blu-Ray Rip

Post by JovialPeon »

I recently snagged the new Supernatural box set, and when I got to processing season 6 the MKV appears corrupted. Every few seconds into the video artifacting appears (attached artifacting.png). The logs from the rip do not contain any errors that I could identify and look clean.

Additionally the MKV process occurred without formalized error, so I do not believe the disk itself is corrupted/scratched/etc. I attempted to play the disk in a blu-ray player and was able to watch without any artifacting issues.

I'm wondering if there's a decryption problem or some other copy protection that is causing the issue. I had this happen once long ago for another WB disk (Mortal Kombat "TV" series), thought I had something corrupted locally, but this seems less likely now. If anyone is able to help me diagnose this issue, I would be most grateful.

A couple other notes, this log was done with Season 7 Disk 1, of which there are two episodes of the same video content (different subs), I have attempted the process with both to ensure consistency.

Perhaps try a different player for your .mkv files? I like MPV (https://mpv.io), but VLC (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/) or Iina (https://iina.io) if you're on a Mac.

It is often the case that when MakeMKV makes a clean rip but the playback glitches the playback software is the culprit.

Wow, I feel like a fool. Thanks for pointing that out, VLC worked perfectly. I was using default windows player for so long without issue that it didn't even occur to me to check on another.

Thank you for the advice!
