Troubleshooting a generic "Backup failed" error from Ubuntu terminal

Post by lance »

Hey team!

I'm trying to run a backup of a Bluray disc (a disc in a TV series) in my Ubuntu 18.04 server from the terminal, but I'm getting a vague "Backup failed" error.

I've had success with these two disc drives and the MakeMKV GUI on my Windows computer. I have not been able to run MakeMKV successfully from the terminal yet.

I tried playing around with the naming and permissions of the output drive because that's usually my problem, but didn't seem to help.

Has anyone run into this before? I've already spent the whole morning and I can't figure it out for the life of me. Would love some help debugging.

For what it's worth, when I ran makemkvcon backup without the --decrypt flag, I do receive a different message:

Code: Select all

MSG:3306,0,0,"Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive","Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive"
Here are the results of the backup command.

Code: Select all

Re: Troubleshooting a generic "Backup failed" error from Ubuntu terminal

Post by lance »

Soooo, I figured out the slightly embarrassing problem.

I'm trying to rip this disc for my significant other. Personally, I would never buy a disc that isn't at least blu ray quality, so the dozens of discs I've ripped up until now have been 90% blu rays.

Her disc, however, was a DVD. And makemkv doesn't allow the "backup" of a DVD. Hence, backup failed.

Trying the makemkvcon mkv command works, suggesting this was solely a "user error" kind of issue.

Hopefully this helps one of y'all in the future.
