SAFE mode aka Sometimes old stuff is the best stuff.

Post by philb1701 »

I've run into an interesting "problem" with a couple of blu-ray disks lately.
One in particular is 9 1/2 Weeks Original Uncut Version.
When I try to run it in makemkv with my relatively new Vantec NST-51053-BK (which I got from Billy, set up for 4K), I can only get about 16 minutes into it and it freezes completely. When I run it in my trusty old Samsung SE-506 (which is not set up for 4K), it reads OK but displays a 2.2X speed SAFE message in the burn window. I'm assuming the old drive has less capabilities then the new one, and when it hits the cranky portions of the disc (of which I've tried three from different vendors), it goes into a SAFE mode and doesn't allow the drive to run any faster.

Anyone else run into this issue?

Morale of the story: Keep your old drives. You may need them sometime.

That Read Speed [SAFE] message is relatively new.
