Star Trek: The Original Series

Post by ElJimador »

Has anyone ripped this successfully? Purchased the complete series new off Amazon and was able to rip all episodes off the first disk (albeit very slowly) but the next 3 disks I've tried keep throwing up errors all over the place and failing to save several of the titles (with no apparent pattern to which ones will rip and which won't). Let me know if anyone has any suggestions or else I'll just request an exchange from Amazon and hope it was just some kind of authoring issue, etc. with this particular set.

Debug log for the last attempt at Season 1 Disk 2 below. Thanks.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Post by hart2hart »

I ripped it. Likely a bad set and you’ll want to replace but you can clean each disc with soft cloth in case they have residue/film on them.

You likely already know this but one angle is original in space special effects and other angel is new high def versions. I went for new versions as I’m not that much a purest.

Thanks. I always wipe disks (new or old) before I put them in the drive to rip and these all appear to be legit new and pristine. (A few Amazon reviews mentioned getting loose disks or ones with the odd fingerprint or light scratch, suggesting they weren't actually even though they were wrapped and sold that way, but I don't think that's the case here). Anyway, I'll do the exchange and cross my fingers the replacement set works better.

I did figure out the angle 1 vs 2 thing but thanks for mentioning it. Funny, I'd read about the original vs. enhanced effects and was sure I'd be a purist about it but as soon as I saw the difference in the opening seconds of a few episodes I'm now totally sold on the enhanced. One other thing I was wondering though: were you able to get the picture in picture commentary on the "Starfleet Access" extras to work when watching on disk? I understand MakeMKV can't rip the PiP so I didn't expect it to work in the MKVs but for me even watching on disk (on an LG UHD player), you see the talking heads in the bottom right corner but there's no way to switch the audio to their commentary. MakeMKV shows it as a DTS Express Stereo track in the fragments that still come up with my minimum 10 min title settings but the track doesn't play anything in MKV either (maybe because those are just segments between the PiP?). Anyway, I can live without it but it's just weird to me that they don't even work right when watching on a regular bluray player.

Wait a minute, MakeMKV can too rip PiP because I ripped a commentary track like that from the Glory UHD. So now I'm even more confused. Anyway, on with the return.

Hopefully, it’s not a bad batch of discs. I’ve gone through as many as 3 set before just getting refund and going to another vendor.

I didn’t attempt to play them in a regular player to see the PiP features. Maybe I’ll pull them out of basement storage and try it out. I’ve got a Sony Player and PowerDVD to test with.

Good luck.

Do you hear nothing from the audio stream? I have found that DTS Express tracks are sometimes sparse in the audio delivered; that is to say that there will be large audio dead zones with the occasional live zone. In my novice experience, I have found the DTS Express track to be used for occasional commentary, where there is otherwise no sound at all. MPC-HC is my player.

I just bought this set. Would you happen to remember which angle has the new effects?

Also, I noticed the video didn't look quite as good as it could, so I think I'll see what I can do to clean it up in Handbrake. Which Handbrake settings would you recommend? In particular, would you recommend sharpening or denoising? Which levels?

It’s been at least a couple years so I don’t recall the angle. I’d just pull same playlist with angle 1 and then 2 to compare. It stays the same throughout the discs.

Agree video could be cleaner but I didn’t sharpen or denoise it. Since it’s a scan of older film stock with its grain, my experience has been that additional post processing never gets better for me. Let me know if you find a good combination.

I just bought Magnum PI on BluRay. It looks much better than it did on DVD but has some of same video issues you’re seeing. I think it’s just best that can be done with older film stock (intended only for 480i scan) scans while keeping price reasonable.

Magnum PI on BD does not include subtitles so I’m in process of ripping DVD sub/idx them from my DVD MKV files, converting to SUP with scaling, and merging results into the HD MKV. Developed a command line workflow builder in Excel to create .bat files. Only troublesome variable is setting Delay time to sync subtitle to video and audio. -1250ms worked for first 5 episodes but episode 6 was -2900ms. Hopefully a reasonable pattern applies. I know that the show intro changed between episodes 11 and 12. If it’ll at least be same for each season. Image

I've been having an issue with a disc from the second season. I'm giving it another try at the moment, but it looks like the disc has a weird circular scratch which is likely causing the issue. Does CBS have some sort of disc replacement program? Or might I have to exchange the whole set?

I ripped it. Likely a bad set and you’ll want to replace but you can clean each disc with soft cloth in case they have residue/film on them.

You likely already know this but one angle is original in space special effects and other angle is new high def versions. I went for new versions as I’m not that much a purest.
I've been having an issue with a disc from the second season. I'm giving it another try at the moment, but it looks like the disc has a weird circular scratch which is likely causing the issue. Does CBS have some sort of disc replacement program? Or might I have to exchange the whole set?

Never heard of anyone getting a replacement disc but you can try. More likely you’ll have exchange the set. If so, I’d rip all you can from this set to minimize having issue with different disc.

I couldn't tell from this post which angle is the "enhanced"? Is it angle 1?

Ages ago now. Rip angle 1 and if it doesn’t strike you as upgraded then it’s angle 2. You’ll know when you see it.
