Wall•E 3 Disc Blu Ray & Make MKV 1.6.0

Post by Skipper Jason »

Hello fellow users,

I've been trying to combat this issue for sometime on this particular blu ray and it seems to be spread across some other software programs too (from what i have read). I've been able to successfully extract an mkv file from this particular blu ray, but it starts in the most awkward spot - the main titles instead of the default pixar lamp logo like every other disney blu ray i've extracted. Does anyone know if this is a mastering error caused by bad cells or find a way around this annoyance. I'm using a fully licensed version of the newest build. My blu ray drive is a Lacie d2 external drive.

@SkipperJason

Hi!

Do you get the same playback result if you use (ONLY) MakeMKV to do a full disc backup instead?

Do you get the same result if you use the full disc backup you just made as your source for MakeMKV to create an .MKV?

I'm seeing the same issue (using 1.6.2). This disc has 2 commentaries that utilize additional video streams, but I don't know if that's the problem. Using BDInfo, I see 4 playlists of interest:

00081.mpls - contains 00071.m2ts (Disney and Pixar logos) + 20000.m2ts
This seems to be the main movie playlist - both additional video tracks are hidden (see BDInfo.png in attached zip).

00082.mpls - contains 00071.m2ts + 20000.m2ts
This is the "Cine-Explore" director commentary playlist - one of the additional video tracks is unhidden.

00089.mpls - only contains 20000.m2ts
Not sure what this is, but it's what gets chosen by MakeMKV.

00095.mpls - contains 20001.m2ts (silhouettes of people sitting down to watch the movie as the Disney and Pixar logos play) + 20000.m2ts
This is the "Geek Track" playlist - the other additional video track is unhidden.

For some reason, from the original disc, MakeMKV sees 00081.mpls, 00082.mpls, and 00095.mpls as identical to 00089.mpls and skips them (see MakeMKV_log1.txt in attached zip). After doing a full backup using only MakeMKV, when I attempt to use MakeMKV on that backup, the result is essentially the same (the playlists seem to be processed in a different order, but MakeMKV eventually skips 00081.mpls, 00082.mpls, and 00095.mpls - see MakeMKV_log2.txt in attached zip).

This is the way this particular disc is mastered. The Disney "castle" logo and main movie are encoded separately and couldn't be combined in a single MKV file. That's why MakeMKV selects only the main movie.

I just picked up the latest edition of this release (2-disc, special features on disc 2, along with a digital copy, the one with the very yellow cover and just a "head shot" of Wall•E, I believe it was released 2017). It seems some of the playlists might have changed.

These are the English versions of the movie I detected:
  • 00081.mpls: Main movie
  • 00115.mpls: Director's Commentary (the subtitle track is the picture-in-picture storyboards and concept art). I believe this is what is called "Cine-Explore" on the disc.
  • 00116.mpls: Crew Commentary, I think referred to as the "Geek Track", which starts with an additional 12 seconds of an MST3K-style silhouette of the commentators entering a theater, but then the view pushes in and we never see them again. The subtitles are the commentary.
There are 6 more, 3 each for French and Spanish on-screen text.
  • 00082.mpls: French, movie
  • 00106.mpls: French, cine-explore
  • 00109.mpls: French, geek track
  • 00083.mpls: Spanish, movie
  • 00118.mpls: Spanish, cine-explore
  • 00119.mpls: Spanish, geek track
If anyone is like me and would like to combine both commentaries and all subtitles into one movie, rather than having three versions of Wall•E taking up space, I thought I'd share these mkvmerge commands I ran to combine them. Because your filenames would differ from mine, replace {main} and such with the name of your file.
  • {main} = playlist 00081.mpls
  • {comm1} = playlist 00115.mpls
  • {comm2} = playlist 00116.mpls

Code: Select all

# Trim the beginning off the "Geek Track" so that it's the same length and the audio lines up.
mkvmerge -o {comm2}.split.mkv --split parts:00:00:12.649- {comm2}.mkv
# Pull the audio and subtitles tracks from the commentary MKVs and combine them with the main one.
mkvmerge -o Wall.E.mkv -S {main}.mkv -D -S {comm1}.mkv -D -S {comm2}.split.mkv -D -A {main}.mkv -D -A {comm1}.mkv -D -A {comm2}.split.mkv
# Note that this groups audio tracks together and subtitle tracks together. This could be written more simply for the less obsessive, such as this (untested):
# mkvmerge -o Wall.E.mkv {main}.mkv -D {comm1}.mkv -D {comm2}.split.mkv
Note that this will gobble lots of hard drive during the process, as you'll need to rip the three titles from the Blu-ray, then produce a second version of the Geek Track to trim off that dumb beginning, and then finally produce the combined MKV. This will be upwards of 100 GB. But once you have "Wall.E.mkv" you can delete all of the other files.

Hi @drukepple,

When I add the Crew Commentary (from 116.mpls) to the proper master MKV (81.mpls), the audio is not in sync with the video. The audio is delayed by about 14 seconds since the video that the audio track came from has a small extra segment (theater crowd in silhouette) and the master MKV does not have this. So, how can I get the alignment right for this file?

Yes, I see your suggestion above but I'm not sure how you are trimming this audio file. I used the GUI version on the Mac to combine the two commentaries but I have the alignment issue as mentioned above.

I can confirm these. I have the same results on my disc I just purchased.

Agree with drukepple and BlenderRookie, this version of the BD is the only one I could rip with MakeMKV and 00081 is the correct title.

Hint: The BD poster cover is yellow and the "E" on the disk has a red background...not white.
