Good Morning, I am attempting to save my third Blu-Ray disc of Firefly. 2 of the titles however return the error "Failed to Save" (00005.mpls and 00003.mpls). This is an original blu-ray disc purchased by me and all other titles across the 3 discs total have all saved successfully except these 2. Any help resolving would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a USB-connected-and-powered optical drive?

The log is characteristic of a USB drive with inadequate power. As the rip speed increases, the drive runs out of power and resets, giving a read error, followed by device not available errors (text varies).

Assuming it is a USB drive, make sure it is plugged into a fully powered USB port, and NOT a USB hub, unless the hub has its own power supply. Some drives require a two-headed cable to run at full speed, but both need to be plugged into fully powered ports.

One work-around for this issue is saving to a "slow" destination, which will limit how fast MakeMKV spins the optical drive. I've tested it using a USB flash drive that was large enough to contain the rip, and that keeps the speed down to around 4-5x. The flash drive needs to be formatted to allow large files - exFAT (works for Windows and MacOS) or NTFS (Windows or Linux).

Interesting. Yes, it is a USB3 optical drive powered directly off the PC. What's odd is I have ripped around 40 other titles the past week without a single issue until this one. I will give it a go to a USB2 Hard Disk I have here and see if that will help solve the issue.

F drive is a USB 2.0 5400 RPM 1 TB external hard disk I was saving to per the suggestion above. The errors are reported as below.

Of note - I have saved around 40 titles so far the past few days without any issues. This is the first disc I have had any issues with. It is a good condition blu-ray and the episodes play without issue. I would be more inclined to blame the fact that it is a USB drive if I wasn't seeing such a high level of success on other disc's up until this point. I unfortunately do not have access to any tower PC's, so I have no way to test this disc on an internal blu-ray drive. Again tho, something like 40 rips without issue until this one.

USB 3 ports should have plenty of power... assuming they're "to specification". Very weird. Some meet the speed requirements, though, without providing all the expected power. Laptops running on battery power often skimp on their USB power requirements.

Whether or not you'll encounter the problem depends a lot on the disk. If the main feature is long, MakeMKV can ramp the speed up pretty fast. I have seen over 10x on a few BDs. A lot of short titles won't let it go that fast, though.

It is USB3 and plugged directly in. It has worked on 40+ titles so far with this being the only ones with issues. Of note, I have ripped movies that were over 2 hours no issue - however these 1 hour episodes are being issues. I attempted to rip it directly to my USB 2.0 external hard disk which is a 1TB 5400 RPM disc. It resulted in the following errors:

The work-around is to use a FLASH drive, not a hard drive. Flash media doesn't accept write data at the same speed as it can be read, so it usually presents a bottle-neck to any ripping. When I use a flash drive as a destination, I see "reads faster than can write" warnings, which keeps the read speed (and disk spin speed) down.

SSDs are a different case - they're usually faster to write to than hard drives.

Copy that - will have to seek out a USB drive that is large enough TY & i'll post an update later once i've tried it.

Attempted to post a reply with logs - however it is pending review. Long story short, same errors when going to a 16gb USB2.0 Flash Drive. I assume you are not meaning Flash Memory (such as Micro SD) - however I could also try that if it is a possibility to resolve.

I just noticed that the offset for one of the errors is consistent with each rip log you've posted: 7589523456. That is highly unusual for a power issue. Usually, it's plus or minus 10% between rips, but this one happened at least 3 times in the exact same location, and then the drive went off-line for a bit, which could be it's locked in a battle to retry the read, while the operating system times out.

Have you checked the disk for defects? Even being dirty, there is usually variance in where the error occurs.

It doesn't appear defective - and the disc plays perfectly normal when viewing. You know how discs can be sneaky like that tho and could be a small scratch I am missing. I will chalk it up as a disc issue and keep going.
