Hi all.

First off, I'm very new to this, so maybe I'm just completely missing something, but I've been trying to rip the BSG series from bluray to put on my plex. Season 1 seemed to go perfectly. They all loaded up, ripped, and worked. As soon as I put disc 1 of season 2 in, I keep getting decryption errors. Disc 2 didn't work either, so I just stopped trying at that point. I'll paste the text of the log in this. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Update: I went ahead and tested out the rest of the discs for this season, and they all failed except disc 5, the last disc. So discs 1-4 won't load but 5 will. All discs that failed gave the same message as what I listed above.

Most common reasons for this are:

Disk-related issue, making the directory area unreadable. Cleaning helps in these cases.

MakeMKV does not have sufficient privileges to talk to drive to exchange key information. MakeMKV needs "run as administrator" status in these cases.

This can also happen if you're running the system remotely, although the error messages in that case are different.

Well this is a brand new disc, so scratches\dirty disc aren't the issue. I am not running remotely, just from my main computer. I tried running MakeMKV as administrator, but still no go, same message as before. I tried another ripping program free trial and it saw the disc and opened to view it and rip, so there's something revolving around the MakeMKV software or the aacs that it uses from what it looks like. Is there any other data besides what I listed in the original post that could help resolve this?

"Brand new" means nothing. I've received scratched disks direct from the distributor, and more and more I'm seeing disks that are chemically contaminated from the packaging, which is why I still advise cleaning the disk when you see errors like this. If MakeMKV cannot read the directory structure, it cannot obtain the information necessary to computer the volume key.

Some other programs obtain their keys from a database, so they just have to get enough information to look the key up.

If cleaning does not help, the FAQ link in my signature explains what information the author needs to begin trouble-shooting a particular disk, or set of disks in this case.

If these are the "new series" Battlestar disks (female Starbuck), the entire series is rippable by MakeMKV in normal circumstances.

Well they are older blurays, but it is the new series with the female Starbuck. I purchased them probably 5-6 years ago, but I haven't opened the packages yet, because I was able to watch the series on netflix. It has since been removed and I wanted to watch through them again, so I decided to open the packages and rip them for plex. I can try giving them a cleaning from chemical contamination. What do you suggest for doing that?

I have two extremes of cleaning... "just" a damp cotton cloth (works for chemical contamination), and Pledge spray furniture wax.

Pledge is reserved for things like getting disks the family (or netflix, when I had that) do to disks, because the wax would fill in minor scratches and cut through finger prints well. That involves spraying, rubbing with a clean finger, then cleaning the excess off with a cotton shop towel (purchased new and never used as a "shop rag").

The longer disks are in a package, the more contamination they pick up. I rarely see it with newly released disks, but anything that has been on the shelf for 6 months or more is suspicious. Especially if you can see "sucker marks" on the packaging, like shown in the picture in this message.

Hmmm ok. I don't see any sucker marks, but I'll take a damp cloth and try to clean it. Definitely doesn't have any fingerprints or anything like that, since these are fresh out of the packaging. I have started ripping the other discs I have though. Season 2 discs 1-4 don't work, but disc 5 does, and so far this morning Season 3 disc 1 does not work, but discs 2-5 have worked with no issue. I'm currently ripping disc 5 as we speak. Once it's done, I'll try the damp cloth and see if that helps any. I'll attach a pic of one of the discs that isn't working.

Just tried the disc cleaning thing. No go. Still gives the exact same message.

Well, since the cleaning didn't fix my issue, I've emailed support, as per the instructions on /faq/item/8, but does anyone else happen to have come across this issue with Battlestar Galactica and know a work around?

I've backed up the series with no issues like what you're reporting. A couple other considerations; the discs could be damaged or manufactured poorly or with errors that prevent the directory from being read. I've had this happen on discs before but not this many in a box set. Still, it is possible...

The other consideration is that the drive could be problematic. If it's an older drive, has seen extensive use, etc., it may need to be cleaned or possibly replaced. Have you experienced similar issues with other (non-BSG) blu-rays?

Nope, every other bluray I've tried has worked, even newer stuff, like Deadpool.

Then it's starting to look like the discs are the culprit. Recommend swapping or replacing.

It is an older bluray drive though, but it hasn't been used very much at all. I bought it many years ago, but never really used it till I decided to rip my collection. I can see if I can find a drive to borrow from a friend and see what happens.

Forgive me, I'm really not trying to be problematic or anything. Like I said originally, I'm just new to all this. If I'm able to open the discs in another program designed to rip bluray, then really it couldn't be my discs or my drive, correct? I don't want to use those other programs for a couple reasons.. 1- they are way more expensive than MakeMKV, 2- they don't seem to have the same ability to rip tv episodes from discs with the same features. Like I also said, I emailed support like that faq says, and provided the log and files, but with other rippers able to open the disc and with my same drive, that would have to be something going on with MakeMKV itself, correct? I promise I'm really not trying to get on anyone's nerves or be a problem, just looking to figure this out and find a resolution.
