seaQuest Season 1 German Blu-ray Release - Disc 2

Post by preserve »

I've had two copies of this release, and both times, I have the exact same error on Disc 2.

I have no errors with my drive, I ripped discs without problem before and after this.

I always rip my discs as soon as I get them to ensure they're okay. Up until now, this method always worked without fail. If I get an error like this, I get a replacement disc, and the problem is solved.

But this time, because the error is the same on two different discs, this suggests to me a faulty pressing or master?

What I'm curious about is whether Mike can tell me what these debug codes mean... was MakeMKV able to successfully work around the problem?

Is there any way to know the timecode of the file it was ripping where the offset issue occurred, so that I can check the rip at that particular time?

From my experience '<unknown>' file errors mean nothing and can be happily ignored.

I've have at least two DVDs that trip it. I have two copies of one of them and they both cause it at the same place, so it's definitely something to do with the way the discs are authored.

I contacted Mike about the first one I found but other than noting it was interesting he didn't do anything about it.

I have the Australian release of SQ1.

I'll rip it now and see if it does the same thing.

Thanks for the info about your experience with this type of problem! Still hoping to learn more about it.

I have the Australian release as well - it doesn't have this problem.

The Australian release and the German release are different, that's why I bought them both :)

I'm annoyed.

I got the Australian release of Quantum Leap S1 as well... then they didn't release any other season... THEN the complete series was released in America and now the AU release is just a waste of money.

And they haven't released any other seasons of SQ... and I'm keeping an eye on Amazon... and...

Yeah, I bought the Australia of SQ1 first, and then they stopped.

Then Germany did SQ1 and SQ2, and SQ3 is coming out next week, I already ordered it :)

Plus the German release has nicer packaging.

I'm just happy it was released, I would have never, ever imagined that this show would be on Blu-ray. It gives me hope for other shows.

Oh, I guess I should keep an eye on Amazon.de instead.

I keep away mostly because of a burning desire to get Eureka on Blu Ray and not having the money to spare.

I bought Season 2 of Transporter from .de only to find it had burnt in forced subtitles :(

Anyone?

Woodstock, do you have any knowledge about what the "<Unknown>" part means?

Should I submit this to the support email?

It would be awesome if MakeMKV could give the timecode when this occurs, just like it gives the timecode for AV sync issues encountered during ripping.

No, I've got no insight into the "<unknown>"... At least in this particular instance.

Sometimes I can know the unknowable, but this is not one of them. :)

It happens at the end of each title on Vol 4 of TMNT 2012. It just looks odd.

Usually no, it should be harmless. The "<unknown>" part looks odd though...

Thank you,
MakeMKV support
Maybe you can badger him more about it.

It also happens on Doctor Who: The Gunfighters (I think)... because my script kept rejecting the disc without being coded to output the full debug information I made the mistake of buying a second copy, which of course had the same problem. It was only then I took a better look at what was happening, realised what was going on and modified the script to ignore '<unknown>' file errors.

-edit- I sent that on the 19th of September 2014.

I submitted this with all the required files, and Mike sent me a reply with information on this issue - thanks Mike! Problem solved! :)
This is a disc mastering error. From practical side it is nothing - the
error is in the subtitle stream, so you have lost a single subtitle
frame. That was a forced subtitle frame, so you've got the error twice.

From error reporting part, yes, this is the bug. It is a first time we
see this error in practice - so next versions should report more sane
error messages in cases like this. Thanks!
