Hi

I've just started using MakeMKV after using DVDfab for a long time and the speed in converts is great, but I'm having an issue. I used full disc backup in DVDfab and stored them to play on my HTPC but now i've setup my home network i want to be able to play them on my 2013 Panasonic TV (all wired 1gb link) so i started to convert the files to MKV's. I dont mind there about 30gb thats fine i have plenty of space. However 1 in every 4 doesnt seem to want to play, i get a black screen with pixels at the top and i can hear the movie but its jumpy were as the others work fine, I've tried it on movies like, 30 days of night, harry potter 7 part 2 and Die hard 4 all have the issue, but Losers, Captain America First Avenger and world war Z all work fine this is on my Panasonic, so i thought i'd try my PS4 they ALL work fine, back to the TV DLNA Panasonic straight pass through, no transcoding... and they still don't work.

Somebody told me it could be the framerate but i can't seem to be able to change this on MakeMKV, plus i also don't know if this would fix it anyway.

Any help would be great.

Most likely cause is that the Panasonic can't deal with the audio codec that is the default for those disks. Smart TVs really aren't that smart... and they have (often severe) restrictions on what they will play. And sometimes those restrictions are worse when you throw DLNA into the situation.

What are you using for the DLNA server? Is it, by chance, Plex? Plex can do "on the fly" modifications to streams depending upon the target device, including changing audio and video streams. If you're using it, the TV's profile might be incorrect.

If you are not using Plex, the way to "fix" such issues varies. Personally, everything in my system goes through handbrake (handbrake.fr for more information), and I have different presets that are used depending upon the target device. The one for smart TVs knocks out a LOT of advanced features, but it also moves the simplest audio format to being "first", so I don't have to explain to my mother how to invoke the audio control menu and make changes so that she can hear the movie.

Thanks for the reply, I'm using Mezzmo to send the files to the TV and using the inbuilt Media server in the TV which will be DLNA to receive. What confuses me if its the Audio is that 2 movies could both be DTS-HD and 1 will play were as the other will fail? I do however have different audio streams set into the MKV file so DTS-HD, DTS, Dolby 2.0 for the Commentary. Too Many Maybe?

The key may be in which stream is FIRST in the track numbering. It may be necessary to use a tool like MKVmerge to re-arrange things.

If you try playing the MKV files in a program like VLC, you can see information on track order in the Information screen.
