I'm using a Buffalo USB Blu-Ray drive with my laptop. Should I get a different one? Any recommendations?

Is it just that one disk giving you problems? There was another similar issue in this past week where the problem was the BD itself, not the drive.

I've tried 2 discs and I had this issue with 1 of them. Could it be a problem with the combination of drive and disc?

If one disk works and another doesn't, it MOSTLY excludes the drive. However, a dual-layer disk can have tracking problems that a single-layer won't have, and the chance of a problem gets worse the more layers there are.

The key would be to test using another BD that has the same amount of data on it, so you know you're working with like-for-like. MakeMKV displays information on the number of layers on "Info" window, BEFORE you click on "open" or "backup". It looks like this:

If it remains just the one disk that has the tracking problem, it's most likely damaged, and should be replaced (assuming it's new).
