MakeMKV 1.7.5 - Subtitles not playing.

Post by nfusion » Wed Jun 27, 2012 5:23 pm

MakeMKV Version = 1.7.5
Movie = Matrix Revolutions
Subtitle Type - According to MKVToolNix 5.6 = HDMV/PGS

I tried 3 different variations to extract.

#1 - Selected the subtitle in MakeMKV > this creates the subtitle in the .mkv file
#2 - DeSelected the subtitle in MakeMKV, but selected the FORCED chekbox > this doesnt create anything in .mkv (im guessing because there are no forced subs)
#3 - Selected both subtitle and forced in MakeMKV > this created 1 subtitle file like in #1 in .mkv, because there are no forced subs.

Played File #1 on my PC (Hali media splitter) - Subs show fine, no problems.
Played file #2 on my PC (Hali media splitter) - No subs, because there aren't any in the file... (no problem)
Played file #3 on my PC (Hali media splitter) - Subs show fine, no problems.

Played file #1 on my standalone ASUS O!PLAY HD media player - it detects the "subs" exist (by letting me cycle through them) but won't display them
Played file #2 on my standalone ASUS O!PLAY HD media player - no subs, because not in .mkv
Played file #3 on my standalone ASUS O!PLAY HD media player - it detects the "subs" exist (by letting me cycle through them) but won't display them

This led me to believe, OK, maybe my ASUS OPLAY doesnt play PGS subs? WRONG!

Played the "folder" on Asus Oplay with the entire structure, movie starts, and I can select all subtitles of many languages / audio streams, and they display fine...

Went and loaded the Avatar.MKV which I already had (which has PGS subs, both fully English, and for English for NAVI spoken parts only) both subs work.

I loaded the MakeMKV matrix3.mkv into MKVMERGE (mkvtoolnix) and even set it to default=yes, forced=yes, even renamed my audio tracks, video tracks, etc, and re coded the MAKEMKV by MKVMerge, the resulting MKVMERGE mkv file still has the same subtitle problem.

Conclusion: There seems to be some funky encoding going in the the PGS subtitles which lets a PC still play them, but standalone players dont play PGS subtitles in MAKEMKV encoded files.

Any help on how I can keep the pretty PGS sub in the mkv and have them accessible on my oPlay (like avatars)!

Thanks!

Sounds like the ASUS O!Play doesn't support PGS subtitles in MKV.

There's one last thing you can try:

1) extract the PGS subtitles from makeMKV's output with mkvextract

2) remux MakeMKV's output with mkvmerge GUI, deselecting the embedded subtitles and adding the external PGS subtitles file created in step 1

If that doesn't work, it must be your player's issue.

Hmm, that's odd. Any idea how that file was created?

@nfusion

Hi!

Can you TURN OFF the subtitles displayed from your "Avatar" .MKV, or are they burned in, as a permanent part of the video?

The avatar has 4 different SUP files

English
English navi only
Chinese
Chineese navi only

Yes i can turn them off, they are not "burned" into the image.

What does Mediainfo report on the subs? "Muxing mode : zlib" is needed to make PGS subs play back on the WDTV Live.

What do you mean by "the folder"? So you have the BD ripped to disc and when playing back the m2ts in it, the Oplay displays the sub? Quite possible it can do so from m2ts but not from mkv. OTOH, since it reconizes them so you can cycle through, I would suggest asking on the official Oplay forums if someone else is having these kinda problems.

Mediainfo shows your subs are compressed with zlib which is exactly what makes the difference between playback and no playback on the WDTV Live. Maybe the Oplay needs some special muxing too?

Here are some PGS subtitle samples:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37259775/pgs_t ... 1_none.mkv
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37259775/pgs_t ... 1_zlib.mkv
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37259775/pgs_t ... 2_none.mkv
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/37259775/pgs_t ... 2_zlib.mkv

For each of these samples, can you tell me whether the PGS subtitles are viewable on your device or not?

The "folder" means the bluray structure I downloaded... ie: a folder for BDMV, a folder for Certificates, the BDMV folder has PLAYLIST, AUXDATA, STREAM, etc. That's what I mean by "the folder".

So yes, when I highlight the folder, OPLAY detects it as en entire bluray asks to play it (doesn't ask which stream in it, and just intelligently plays the movie off the bat)

Likewise if I manually play the m2ts file, its fine.

If I remux the m2ts file to another m2ts file, it's still fine.

Not only does it recognize to cycle through, PGS subs (in general) play in my other movie (which wasn't done by me).
The Official O!PLAy support forum is junk.... so no use asking there.

yes Mediainfo shows them compressed, but the AVATAR ones are compressed too, and THEY WORK.

All 4 work on comp by default.

All 4 are not detected by default on o!Play (ie: they aren't "forced", and by "forced" i don't mean burned in). I have to enable each one (cycle through them) in each mkv, but none actually show any text.

So. None work.

All play with VLC on my PC and all show up as having subs on the WDTV LIVE SMP. However, only PGS_type1_zlib.mkv gets displayed when subtitle default is set to on (the SMP ignores any forced flags). Curiously enough item #8 "Otherwise, here is your room key" is skipped and not displayed. Possibly due to these erros listed by BDSUP2SUB++?

WARNING: missing start of epoch at offset 0x00000000
WARNING: Missing PTS start -> ignored
WARNING: end without at least one epoch start

Dropped VobSubs were common back in the earlier firmwares when an item had no end time, can't remember having seen this mentioned for PGS subs though.

OK. FWIW, MakeMKV was not involved in the creation of any of those samples.

I'll have a few more samples for you to try later today.
