Bluray disc Galapagos BBC not ripping correctly

Post by adsmith » Mon Nov 21, 2011 10:29 am

Makemkv v1.6.16 rips the disc Galapagos but resulting files do not play in VLC (or anything else). Sound track is Ok.
Stream 0 has type Windows Media Video VC1 (WVC1).

Other blu-ray discs rip Ok.

VLC does not support VC-1. You will have to use another player. I believe SMPlayer supports it, but I'm not 100% sure.

@adsmith

Hi!

Since you say that, "resulting files do not play in VLC (or anything else)", I'd suggest that you rip the disc again, with MakeMKV's logging turned on - and then submit the log...

What my original post should have said was:

What is it about the disc that causes makemkv to produce that type of output file?

As per request here is the debug file:

My guess is that the video is 1080i, same as the HDDVD version.

Try using VLC's Codec info on the file and see what readings you get for the video stream. If it's 1080i then the file is fine, the problem is that VLC can't play 1080i.

Many thanks, problem solved.

Installed Flip4Mac so Quicktime player was able to read. Exported. Handbrake did the final tidy-up. :)

Oops! my error.

Sequence was:

1. install Flip4Mac;
2. Rip using MakeMKV;
3. Change wrapper using MPEG Streamclip;
4. change wrapper contents using QuickTime Player;
5. tidy-up using HandBrake.

long winded but it works!

Thanks again to all those who helped.

VLC does not support VC-1.
More specifically, VLC doesn't not support interlaced VC-1. But work is underway to add support to libavcodec, which means apps that use it like VLC will eventually be able to decode it.

AFAIK, the only software to support interlaced VC-1 are "official" Blu-ray playback software (PowerDVD etc.), software that has access to Microsoft's decoder (setarip_old should be able to answer that one) and Flip4Mac under OS X.
