Watchmen Director's Cut

Post by JasonX » Fri Oct 07, 2011 2:54 am

Works for about 4 minutes (1Gbps output file) then hangs (and usually recovers with a fail popup) at 2min 38s with an out put size of 1138.2M whilst reading 00500.m2ts.

Fails at the same place pretty consistently...

Well, I was an idiot. I swapped the subdirectory and drive names, so OF COURSE it couldn't write anything to a non-existent hard drive! :-P

It would be really nice if MakeMKV would spit out more meaningful error messages, though. How hard is it to recognize "that drive doesn't exist"???

Anyway, I got both a good BACKUP, and then a clean & simple rip of BOTH "main titles". I have no idea which one is the real movie. One is 26.75gb and the other 28.01gb.

Isn't the larger file some sort of "Maximum Movie Mode", i.e. a visual director's commentary?

You might assume so, but it turns out that the SMALLER file is the one with "director walkons", storyboards, comparisons, etc. Weird. At least, in this case, it's obvious which is which, so I can toss the 26gb file and just watch the movie, mostly secure in the knowledge that I have the entire film in tact.

The smaller file in terms of file size or duration? I never actually used MakeMKV on this particular disc (US edition of the Director's Cut, not the Ultimate Cut), but I'm pretty sure the Maximum Movie Mode was a few minutes longer (looking at the durations in HandBrake)…

I actually re-ripped this disc today. Indeed, while the "Maximum Movie Mode" is the longer feature, it's also smaller in terms of file size.

Again, my thanks to all of you who take the time to post these helpful tidbits. I was looking for this information today (as I picked up Watchmen today), and came here because I knew I would find it. You all have collectively saved me hours of wasted time. My hat is off to every single person on there forums who chooses to spend their time to help the community. You're all awesome!

Ditto! I created an account just to say thanks. A decade later and this is still very useful! I hope to do my part someday soon.
