Make backup of blu-ray disc

Post by AlanS » Mon Jul 28, 2025 3:23 pm

Please help me. When I used MakeMKV to back up a DVD I got an ISO file. I knew what do do with that, just copy to a blank DVD. However, when I use MakeMKV to back up a blu-ray disc, I got a number of folders. One of the folders was MAKEMKV. Do I just copy the folders to a blank blu-ray disc or is there something else I must do?
Thank you very much for any clarification you can give me.

Presumably you're trying to burn backups of discs onto optical media?

There are lots of reasons why this isn't a great plan. The short summary is storing movies on a hard drive is generally cheaper and more reliable than trying to burn them out to optical disc.

But if you must…

There is Windows software called imgburn. You can use it to create an ISO of a blu-ray backup. Just select the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders to include in the ISO.

Thank you for responding. I have the IMGBURN software. Are you telling me to burn the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders directly onto a blank blu-ray disc? Do I also include the MAKEMKV folder or not include it?

What adds to the confusion is that when I begin to back up the blu-ray disc with MAKEMKV, it says that I will be able to use MAKEMKV to view the backup. Tht would lead me to believe that if I want the backup to be on a blank blu-ray disc I need only the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders. Am I correct in how I am thinking?

Thank you very much again.

I'm suggesting that you never burn another piece of optical media ever again. :)

But if you must, do not include the MAKEMKV folder.

Once you've made a backup of a blu-ray (or DVD or 4K UHD) with MakeMKV, you can open that backup with MakeMKV and create .mkv files from it.

Out of curiosity, why are you burning disc backups onto optical media?

Thank you again. I burned the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders directly onto a blank blu-ray disc and as soon as IMGBURN was finished PowerDVD started on my computer! I also tried the disc on a blu-ray player and it played great!

To answer your question: actually I don't use optical media anymore. I back everything up to external hard drives. This was an exception. It was a 55 year old movie ("Scrooge"). The copy is for my sister-in-law, to give her at Christmas. I think we both agree that it is just as easy to view the mkv files, whether they be split or not.

One other matter When I backed up the blu-ray with MAKEMKV, it said that I could view the content by using the MKV software. Can you tell me the steps?

Thank you again. Your help is much appreciated.

The movie A Christmas Carol (1951) starring Alastair Sim? (https://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Carol-Brian-Desmond-Hurst/dp/B0DC7M1V74/136-0385304-1862002)

Sometimes it is called Scrooge and sometimes it is called A Christmas Carol.

Or maybe you mean Scrooge (1970) starring Albert Finney? (https://www.amazon.com/Scrooge-Blu-ray/dp/B005DKS1XK)

I haven't seen this one, but Sir Alec Guinness as Marley's ghost seems like it might be fun.

MakeMKV is not a software player. You can not use MakeMKV to view movies. You can open a backup to create .mkv files from it (File -> Open File). If you've created a decrypted backup, you can use other players like VLC or MPV or others to watch the .m2ts files that have the video and audio content of a blu-ray (look in the <backup>/BDMV/STREAM/ folder).

55 years old would make it 1970, so I believe he is talking about Scrooge (1970).
Cheers :D
