Rip completed with errors (FFMPEG_ERROR and Read Error) - should I be concerned?

Post by Blu-Shield » Sat Dec 28, 2024 10:03 am

Physical hardware: HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS55
Firmware: ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin except where otherwise noted
Operating system: Linux (Flathub package)
MakeMKV version: 1.17.8
Flathub package commit date: 2024-11-05 21:04:35 +0000
Flathub package commit ID: b55330a3ec8fe3f67e8c2db2481ee65ad0680e93d754b086d6dc1145733229d5

A number of my rips completed (as in, they managed to save every file I requested), but left error messages in the output window. Do these error messages indicate problems with the output files? Should I attempt to re-rip these titles?

The FFMPEG_ERROR messages resemble those reported at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=32918 - furthermore, they've only occured on discs with TrueHD 5.1 audio tracks (I've never seen FFMPEG_ERROR messages on my LPCM / lossy DTS / DTS-HD Master Audio rips). However, there are some differences compared to the report I linked to:
  • The post I linked to discussed problems that occured when using MakeMKV to perform audio transcoding. I'm not using MakeMKV for transcoding purposes; I'm just using MakeMKV to rip to MKV files.
  • I performed all of my rips using MakeMKV version 1.17.8, which is supposed to have fixed the bug described in that forum post
  • Only some (Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 1, and the 2nd disc for orange) of my TrueHD 5.1 rips produced those FFMPEG_ERROR messages. Other TrueHD 5.1 rips (Psycho-Pass Season 1, Psycho-Pass 2, Psycho-Pass The Movie, and the 1st disc for orange), performed using the same version of MakeMKV and the same Flathub package version, didn't produce any errors in the output.
  • Checking the output files with MediaInfo, I was unable to find the Channels_Original metadata field discussed in viewtopic.php?p=128049
  • Checking the output files with MediaInfo, the Channels metadata field discussed at viewtopic.php?p=128049 always contains the correct value (6)
Output is shown below (note that debug mode was disabled during these rips - I captured the output simply by copy-pasting the text from the output window):

orange Blu-ray Disc 2

Note that, in addition to the FFMPEG_ERROR messages, this rip also produced a Read Error.

Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 1 Blu-ray Disc 2

Note: This disc failed to rip 3 times using the ASUS firmware, so I reflashed my drive with HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin firmware, in the hope of getting better results. The output shown below is from the rip I performed using WH16NS60 firmware.

Re: Rip completed with errors (FFMPEG_ERROR and Read Error) - should I be concerned?

I don't really know enough to have much to say about the FFMPEG_ERROR messages. I don't have much experience with MakeMKV on Linux.

Regarding the read error, however, I can make a comment. As a rule of thumb, if MakeMKV encounters an unrecoverable problem when ripping a disc, it won't produce output (more specifically, it'll delete the output it had up to the point of failure leaving you with nothing). If there is output, then MakeMKV thinks it is correct.

In MakeMKV's preferences, there is a read retry limit (on the IO tab). So when the drive reads a spot on the disc incorrectly, it retries until it gets a correct read or it hits the limit.
