Is this an internal or external drive?

On the assumption that it's an internal drive (none of the power issues associated with USB drives), the error messages are consistent with the drive trying very hard to read a dirty disk, while the operating system is timing out.

It is an external drive and it apparently was a power issue. I disconnected every other external USB device and the the disc opened with no problems. Never made the connection before, but now it makes perfect sense.
Many, many thanks!
