First, I'd like to say I'm very pleased with MakeMKV. I have burned hundreds of my DVDs and Blu-Rays. I store them on a local Linux server after ripping with MakeMKV and compressing using Handbrake. I serve them with Plex through both the native Samsung apps and a FireTV.
For a vast majority of my rips, they look and sound great. However, on a few I get a weird and very distracting digital artifact. It's a bit hard to describe. But here goes.
Dialog is fine. But, when there is background music below some dialog, I get a weird crunching sound. It's in the higher range, yet it feels like it's below the main sound, if that makes any sense.
The three Blu-Rays I've gotten this on are Frozen, Scarface and Interstellar (haven't checked everyone yet). I have tried a few things. First, I tried keeping the MKV and not using Handbrake at all. But the artifacts are still there. I have tried using different audio defaults on Handbrake, including stereo only.
Anyone else have these occasional issues? It is definitely happening when the Blu-Ray is initially ripped with MKV. Is there some default setting I can use in MakeMKV to alleviate this? Are these just bad Blu-Ray pressings?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Audio Artifacts On A Few Blu-Rays
Re: Audio Artifacts On A Few Blu-Rays
I recently did Interstellar under 1.9.2 and had no issues; the logs are below. MakeMKV creates exact copies, so if there are "artifacts," it's probably something in your playback flow.
Maybe your system is having trouble on a particular channel. I converted an old DVD of "Tora, Tora, Tora," and the DVD had a Dolby 4.1 audio track that caused vlc to weez/screech/etc., but played fine on my media setup in 4.1 or stereo.
