why can't MakeMKV do it?

MakeMKV BETA v1.84 gave the following report:

• Can't read AACS VID from disc -- most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive Highest AACS version is v28 , MKB saved as -Users ...tgz The volume key is unknown for this disc -- video can't be decrypted Backup failed

The BRD is ©2011 Concorde Home Entertainment GmbH -- not too old and not too new.
The BRD plays perfectly well with the same drive and computer using Mac Blu-ray Player.

There was a file saved (and its name/path reported to you) that should be forwarded to svq@makemkv.com for analysis. Has that been done?

I turned on logging, reran the job, and it produced the same error. I've emailed it to the address provided and hope it will help.
