Pushing Daisies, Season 1, no separate episodes

#1 Post by systemdek » Mon May 06, 2013 6:35 pm

Pushing Daisies, Season 1, has three episodes on each of the Blu-ray discs. When MakeMKV scans disk 1 (in a Pioneer BDR-205 connected via FW800 to a Mac running v1.8.1 & DASPI 1.3) it retrieves one 23-chapter 16.5GB title, not individual titles for each episode. The same thing happens for disks 2 & 3 as well. Anything I can do to access the individual episodes?

If you have the space, rip the discs and use mkvtoolnix to split them by chapters to get the episodes.

Thanks. I'll work around the single file. I hadn't seen an issue reported with these discs, so I thought I'd send in a report.

If you're going to split them, because you are going to playback the MKV files and not re-encode them to another format, then you would use a software like MKVtools to split them into individual episodes.

My self I wasn't going to use the MKV files for playback, but rather re-encoded them into .m4v/mp4 files using HandBrake and it's chapter function, were you can specify the starting chapter, (were the episode begins) and the "through" chapter, (were the episode ends) then HandBrake encodes only those chapters you selected and nothing else.

It takes a little getting use-to, figuring out were to end and start, but you'll get it after trying a few times. You also can see the length of what you select, when using the "chapter" function of HandBrake, which is a good guide as to what you are selecting.

I have this series in blu-ray and split the episodes with a little trial and error.

Here's the length of each episode in seasons 1 & 2

S1E1 - 41:42
S1E2 - 41:50
S1E3 - 42:37
S1E4 - 41:51
S1E5 - 43:06
S1E6 - 41:15
S1E7 - 43:16
S1E8 - 42:16
S1E9 - 44:43

S2E1 - 43:19
S2E2 - 43:16
S2E3 - 43:17
S2E4 - 43:15
S2E5 - 41:11
S2E6 - 43:15
S2E7 - 42:47
S2E8 - 42:12
S2E9 - 43:12
S2E10 - 41:58
S2E11 - 43:20
S2E12 - 43:17
S2E13 - 43:15

Current versions of mkvmerge GUI can split by chapter.

I have the same issue myself; going to attempt this mktvtoolnix to split now. thanks for the heads up.

[edit] yup the toolnix is working fine, but i found its better to split the episodes by chapter rather than duration. Its accurate and simpler.

Also, if you recode to make the files smaller with handbrake, you can build individual MP4 files for each episode by chapter numbers there, too, without having to break up the MKV file.
