I have not been ripping any discs lately so when I needed to rip a DVD a couple months ago MakeMKV reported my version was too old and I needed to install the latest version, which I did. I ripped the DVD I needed to and then didn't need it again until today when some new Blu-Rays showed up in the mail.
I had to load the latest Beta key from the forum and then I tried my first Blu-Ray and it failed to open and reports:
NO SENSE:NO ADDITIONALY SENSE INFORMATION
It reports this over and over and over again until if finally gives up and fails to open the disc. So I tried a second disc and the same thing happened. Then I went to the closet and got an old Blu-Ray off the shelf and the same thing happened so this is does not seem to be specific to the disc itself but I seem to have a problem outside my scope of expertise.
Any help would be appreciated.
Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
UPDATE: I stepped back to 1.18.1 and the problem persists so I guess something is amiss in Windows 11 which is one of the worst OSes ever for breaking things.
Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Blu-Ray drive and then I noticed MakeMKV reports:
Automatic SDF is disabled or failed.
I have no idea what this is but it seems to be something important.

Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
It won't download the SDF file and if you download it manually it just locks up the program and deletes the BIN file which results in the program being in a perpetual state of "opening" but just sits there and does nothing.
Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
It looks like Mike released a big change today: SDF update November 2025
It might have a couple of rough edges at the moment and it might be affecting you… but I'm just speculating.
Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
Thanks you, but I don't have an Pioneer drive. I have an LG drive that I bought earlier this year and it has worked flawlessly until now.
Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
Well, now I have no Blu-Ray drive in this computer. I flashed my LG WH14NS40 to the firmware to enable libredrive since it is on the list compatible with this "wonderful new change to MakeMKV we couldn't live without" that rendered the drive useless in MakeMKV but it still worked fine in Windows. I rebooted the computer and opened MakeMKV and the drive now listed as Libredrive working. Loaded the disc I needed to rip and it chugged for a few seconds and then the drive became unavailable in windows.
After several reboots the drive no longer shows up and the light doesn't even come on. I had to extract the disc using a paper clip because the tray no longer worked. The drive is dead.
Pretty sad. I fired up my extra machine which is my VERY OLD HTPC that has an OLD LG GGC-H20L drive that is over 10 years old with MakeMKV 1.17 something and it read and ripped the disc immediately.
If I wouldn't have tried to use my GOOD computer yesterday with MakeMKV I'd still have a Blu-Ray drive that worked perfectly up until this change.
Now it seems as finding a usable drive is not only difficult but very expensive. Thanks so much!

Re: Latest version of MakeMKV won't open Blu-Ray disc
To add insult to injury I just pulled another old LG GGC H20L off the shelf and installed it in my good computer and MakeMKV loaded a disc immediately and started the rip. This is an OLD HDDVD/BR combo drive. It may not be fast but at least it works with 1.18.2.
I bought that LG WH14NS40 about a year ago. It had only a few dozen rips on it and now it is dead thanks to a patched firmware.
Something tells me that although the GGC H20L drive is slow it will outlast any new junk you can buy.
