.. legally bought my first BD, wanted to watch it with my kids, had to tell them it won't work.

This DRM stuff is such a shame.
I refuse to buy a BD Player that does nothing 99,9% of the time (I have a RPi2 as an HTPC and it works nicely for anything not BD)

Actually, Frozen doesn't have much in the way of "special" copy protection, at least on the North American release.

Mike will have to translate the debug codes given at the beginning of the load, but they are almost certainly related to the failure to exchange the AACS key; the initial read of the disk is to pick up information necessary to make the key exchange work, and there are problems reading that information.

I would check for any dirt of finger prints near the center of the disk, where the directory information is stored. Just because a disk is new does not mean it doesn't have issues; many disks I get show rings from where the suction cups picked up the disk to put it in the packaging. Those rings need to be cleaned off of the non-label side, because they scatter light trying to read the data.

The BD is in pristine condition..
The drive also plays a pre-2012 BD successfully with the standard libaacs+VLC combination on linux..

I still don't fully understand this whole DRM stuff, but is there anything in my drive that can cause this?
So, assuming my drive correctly reads the disc and MakeMKV has a certificate that's still valid, the drive (+MakeMKV) should be able to decypt the disc no matter how the revocation status looks like in the drive? Can I provide more drive info, how, and would that help?

Or is there any drive with modified firmware that would be capable of playing all discs? (I'd much prefer the solution so my RPi could play BDs I buy without ripping before)

"Playing all disks" is not going to happen, simply because the DRM changes regularly. In the case of Bluray, the disk can revoke the key within a player, rendering the player incapable of reading BDs, until the key can be changed. In a stand-alone player, that requires a firmware upgrade; in the case of a computer-based player, your software (MakeMKV in this case) needs to be upgraded.

But that does not seem to be the case here, since the drive will read a different Bluray disk. Key revocation takes out ALL BDs, regardless of age, and it is enforced inside the drive itself. And the log shows that Frozen is using a rather old version of AACS (v39), so that shouldn't be the problem.

The link within it points to a site that maintains a database of volume keys for disks, which MakeMKV can use, but does not normally need. You would download the key database file and place it in your MakeMKV data directory (you can find that in Preferences->General), and try the rip again. I've never had to resort to it, but it has helped in some circumstances.
