MakeMKV not recognizing BluRay discs anymore

Post by Momro »

Hi everyone,

I don't know why, but MakeMKV is not recognizing any BluRay disc anymore. DVDs are read fine, but no BluRays. MakeMKV just says that there was no disc inserted.

I'm not sure which information you need to help me, but the following is the status of my HTPC:
  • Windows 8.1 x64
  • Mainboard: Asus Z87I
  • BD-ROM: Asus BC-12D2HT Rev 1.00, Firmware 2113-06-14 12:00 (?)
  • MakeMKV 1.8.11 winx64 (bought it)
The BluRays work in my notebook w/o problems, so the problem must be on the HTPC's side, but which part - I've no idea :-/

I hope you can give me some feedback, hints, or even a solution ;-)

Best,
Momro

I don't have any BluRay player software, so I cannot check this, but I can tell you that even Windows does not detect the disc :-/

Does Windows see DVDs in the drive?

Sounds more like the bluray drive is damaged or used up..

What if you use the bluray drive in another pc?

Yeah, DVDs work and MakeMKV offers to rip them.

I was able to read the BluRay discs in my notebook and are currently ripping BluRays there as a replacement while I'm "fixing" this issue here.

One possibility - are you running MakeMKV as a user, or as an administrator?

SOMETIMES, Windows (and Linux as well) will take over the drive and won't allow the low-level access that MakeMKV needs to get around the AACS copy protection. I've never been able to duplicate it, but I have seen mention of it in other topics.

And then, there is the old stand-by for Windows, "Have you reset the machine?" If you haven't, shut it down (power off shutdown), then restart it. Sometimes something low-level gets wonky and even Windows doesn't have complete control of the drive.

Hi there,

I'm afraid that didn't help either. I've started MakeMKV as admin and it didn't read the BluRay as well. I guess it's a case for RMA, or do you have any other ideas?

If I returned it and were refunded, which BluRay drive can you recommend? Is there a list of "good" drives?

First of all MakeMKV isnt the problem. If Windows cant see the disc then im pretty sure the issue is the bluray drive or Windows.

I use Linux Ubuntu, so my big advice is to put the bluray drive in another pc and see if it works. If not and theres RMA or guarantee on it then use that.. Just be aware that im not able to determinate that the bluray drive is the issue, but as you write it it sounds like the issue is the bluray drive.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. I tested Ubuntu 13.04 live and it didn't work there as well. I guess I'll return the drive to Amazon.

Again, I wonder whether there is a list of good/silent BluRay drives suitable for my HTPC?

Why silent? Unless you play movies with it besides of ripping them with makemkv?

I use dvds only and rip them to my nas, from there i stream to raspberry pi devices with openelec.. Just requires that i buy a mpeg2 license to decode mpeg2..

Blurays takes a lot of space and will demand a lot of cpu to compress..

Well, I like it silent, though I rip all blurays I have and streaming from my server.

I've no problem compressing blurays because I have a neat computer/CPU at work and can do it there.

I got a replacement from Amazon and it works fine. I'm glad this is fixed, though it was a real hassle to extract the drive from my HTPC :-/
