How Do I Play Region B Blu-Ray Directly From Disc?

Unfortunately for me, this very good a/v quality edition of an old favorite is Region B locked, so my Oppo 203 players won't read it. But after installing MakeMKV neither will VLC player.

Don't play the disc, rip it. Your LG drive will thank you! Then you can watch the ripped file on your oppo or on your PC.

If you must play it (not recommended), integrate VLC with MakeMKV in preferences so it can be used as the on-the-fly derypter.

Thanks for your reply. But if I do rip it I would want to copy the entire disc, including all the extras, like all of the commentaries. And I will I also retain complete BD menu functionality?

To do this do I rip the entire disc in one session and save it as an ISO or some other file format?

If yes, I've never done this. How to do that or do what else for what I want?

Also, I don't have a server; hopefully, later this year. But one reason why I don't like doing DVD-much less BD-ripping is that my PC's system and storage drives are SSDs, and unlike HDDs you permanently lose free space even if you later "delete" any content.

When I do get my ~ 12 TB server most of its drives will likely be SSDs. But I do have a 4TB external HDD.

Can makeMKV rip the entire BD movie disc, save it as an ISO or MKV (which ??) file and store it directly to my external drive, without needing to first store any of it to my internal SSDs?

Please describe all steps to do this.

SSDs are generally more expensive per TB than HDDs and the various speed advantages of SSDs are wasted when accessing movies. There are other usage scenarios where SSD storage in a NAS makes sense.

I don't agree with your first statement as TRIM command or not any space written to an SSD can be done so only once, unlike an HDD. Of course, both drive technologies have their pros and cons.

On the first screen of MakeMKV, there's an icon of a yellow folder with a green arrow. This will allow you to make an optionally decrypted backup of a disc. In the case of a DVD, MakeMKV will produce an .iso file. In the case of a blu-ray or UHD, it'll produce a folder with the entire disc's contents.

I have no idea if any of your disc players can play a backup. I've seen some folks on the forum talk about using a Dune player to play backups, but I don't have any experience with any playback system using backups.

If you rip the whole disc to a folder backup, they won't be MKV files. They will be the exact same files (and file structure) that's on the disc, just decrypted.

No, MakeMKV can rip a complete DVD to ISO but it only rips a complete blu-ray / UHD disc to a folder backup. This folder backup is exactly the same file structure and file types as what is on the disc, just decrypted.

I have no idea what an Oppo can play. You would have to read your manual or do some research on Oppo file compatibility.
