Community Blu-ray EXTRAS (DBG ASSERT errors)

Post by 4@ron= »

Hello forum, thank you for your help!

The Community Blu-ray set was just released and I picked it up today from Best Buy. I bought this collection for the EXTRAS included on each disc. However, those are the very titles not backing up properly in makemkv. I've tested this with 4 discs so far and got the same error with all. The episodes backup without a hitch, but the extras (the main reason I bought the blu-rays) do not. An .mkv is made but it's virtually unplayable by VLC or other media players. If I drop it into Handbrake, it will then play once encoded to .mp4 but it's in slow motion and the audio is way out of sync.

Here's the message I get with each of the blu-ray discs:

Loaded content hash table, will verify integrity of M2TS files.

etc... for 5 more titles. First 12 titles are fine (episodes) this extras all give the above error.

Once I chose a problematic title, and click save, then the DBG ASSERT scrolls 100+ times and then says:

Help anyone?

You clipped out the version number from your log - which version of MakeMKV are you running?

I'm running the latest version (paid for) MakeMKV v.1.12.3 [darwin(x64-release)]

And let me also add, I've never had any problems with the software or my hardware so I'm fairly certain it's got something to do with the handling of this disc by MakeMKV. I did some digging on this forum before posting so I've already tried rebooting, cleaning the disc, testing the disc in other players, etc... The extras work fine in the blu-ray player software using the same drive I always use.

Also, since writing, it would seem Season 6 (last 2 discs) are ripping fine. I've not tried Season 3-4 yet so I can't confirm if it's isolated incident in only the first two seasons (i.e. first 4 discs)...

Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I tried installing v1.12.2 and unfortunately I received the same DBG ASSERT error messages for the same titles :(

It would seem to be a legit bug, hoping it's addressed in the next update...

Thanks.

I am having the same issue with the extras on Seasons 1 and 2 of the Community BDs. As 4@ron= says, the episodes are fine, but it runs into an issue once it gets to the extras. MakeMKV throws a seemingly endless stream of

DBG ASSERT: Le;bTF5]e*?;""b$^~H;'*T%qV? at :diPhrdUKS`qxZu+hkA(:121264303

followed by

AV sync issue in stream 0 at 0:13:18.330 : video stream has 23925 frames with invalid timecodes

The files rip, but when I try to play them in VLC, they are in very slow motion and the audio is completely out of sync.

What I've tried, all with the same results:
  • v1.12.3
  • v1.12.3 after updating my BD drive's firmware
  • v1.12.2 with the updated firmware (per the suggestion from Woodstock)
On a whim I also tried rolling back to v1.10.10, but it does not support AACS v65, which is used on the discs. Same goes for v1.12.0.

I had no issues with the extras on Season 3 Disc 1. This, along with 4@ron='s experience with the 2 discs of Season 6 suggests it might only be an issue with Seasons 1 and 2. I'll update on the rest of Season 3 and Season 4 after I finish them later this week.

EDIT: I have a paid MakeMKV license, and running on Windows 7 Home Premium.

I'm having similar problems with some Blu-Ray discs of Japanese origin that were released 2-3 years ago.

1. A BD which contains 3 audio streams. 2 of 3 of the audio streams (5.1 & 5.1 HD), when individually selected, result in a successful rip.

If I select the other audio stream (LPCM), makemkv 1.12.2 or 1.12.3 gets stuck 95% of the way through, emitting the same form of errors. The program will respond to the "Stop" button if this condition is caught soon. But if I wait a long time (after 10s of MB of repetitions of the same error line have been written to the log file) then makemkv will have become unresponsive.

2. Another BD contains only one audio stream and can't be ripped to .mkv . The same thing happens, getting stuck about 95% of the way through.

Makemkv can successfully backup this disc (decrypted). Then the main title BD_ROM/BDMV/STREAM/00001.m2ts file can be played by VLC all the way through.

However, even if I open the decrypted BD_ROM backup dir (from hard disk) with makemkv and try to "rip" to .mkv files, it will get stuck in the manner previously described.

Based on the fact that these discs can be successfully read to completion either in backup mode, or when only certain audio streams are selected, we can therefore almost certainly conclude that this is not a hardware io type of error, but rather some sort of bug in makemkv related to dealing with certain (possibly malformed) disc metadata.

I will be submitting one or two bug reports about this within a few days...

Are you having MakeMKV convert audio as you rip?

I rip LPCM audio BDs regularly, but I have MakeMKV leave the audio tracks as-is. Most Sentai titles are LPCM.

I'm not sure if this was directed at my comment, or crboc's, but I do not have MakeMKV convert any audio as it rips. I want the bit-perfect streams directly from the disc. I didn't even know it was possible for MakeMKV to do any conversions (not that it would have mattered for me). I let my receiver handle all the decoding.

The problematic Extras from Community Seasons 1 & 2 only have a single DD Stereo audio track. The regular episodes (which have no problems) have DTS-HD MA 5.1 (with DTS 5.1 core) for the regular track and a DD Stereo track for the commentary. These all rip and playback flawlessly.

Update now that I've finished ripping all 6 seasons: Only Seasons 1 & 2 have issues with the extras. The extras for Seasons 3-6 all rip and playback without problems.

This should be fixed in 1.14.0

mike admin,

Thanks for checking in on this thread! I just tried all of the affected discs with 1.14.0, and unfortunately that did not completely fix the issue.

The good news is that 2 of the extras on the Season 2 discs appear to be ripping now, though I've noticed some frame drops during playback of these files.

The bad news is that the rest of the Season 2 extras and all of Season 1 extras are still having problems. In fact, these extras no longer rip at all. As soon as it starts in on one of the extras files, it immediately begins throwing DBG ASSERTS, then quits with the "x titles saved, y failed" error. Previously, the files would rip, but would not play back properly (slow frame rate and out-of-sync audio). If you would like, I can send you the log files or upload them here.

Fortunately, the regular episodes I tested still rip and the ripped files play back without issue.

Just saw that 1.14.1 was released today, so I tried the problem discs again. No change. The first 2 extras on Season 2 Disc 2 rip, but none of the other extras do. I'll email my logs for all 4 discs where I try to rip extras only.

Thanks for your work on this! It's much appreciated.

Yes great work, helpful forum but alas, same issue -- no extras ripping successfully on S1-2 :( For devoted fans of this TV franchise the extras are pretty much the main reason we bought the Blurays, well that and the DTS-HD MA. The video quality is good, but little better than the Amazon version. Any future fix is appreciated, I'll check back in a couple of weeks...

He's working on it. I've been in contact and sending logs and other requested info to help with the process. There seems to be something unusual about the h.264 encoding on these that hasn't shown up before.
