Hunt for Red October:The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted

Tried to create mkv file for my Hunt For Red October blu-ray disk via MakeMKV but it always failed after exporting the mkv file to about 9GB. So I just directly copied all the files from the Blu-Ray disk to my PC's hard drive successfully then used MakeMKV to open the "index.bdmv" or "MovieObject.bdmv", now hit the error below:

Very first time running into this kind of issue, did anyone observe the same problem before? Does this mean my blu-ray disk has physical damage or I just need to find a new volume key?

Send this file to svq@makemkv.com, then check periodically (usually a couple of days) with MakeMKV to see if it's been processed yet.

MakeMKV will create a file to get the update, but it does not send it without your permission (i.e., it makes you do it).

I tried one more thing, used the backup function in MakeMKV to export files onto my PC hard drive without checking the box of "Decrypt video files" then cancel it when it was exporting m2ts files. Then I copied the previously saved m2ts files into D:\backup\HUNT_FOR_RED_OCTOBER\BDMV\STREAM\, Now MakeMKV can open index.bdmv under D:\backup\HUNT_FOR_RED_OCTOBER\BDMV successfully, but export decrypted video file still failed with the error:

Your log in the first post suggests you are opening a file on your hard drive, not the optical disc. How was this file created?

That probably won't work. Blu-rays and UHDs are encrypted such that one can't just copy the files and have them work. That's a big part of what MakeMKV does.

MakeMKV has a backup function that can copy the entire contents of a disc to your hard drive and remove the encryption. Some players can play these backups. MakeMKV can open these backups and make .mkv files. Or, obviously, one can make .mkv files from the disc directly.

Unfortunately the MKV backup function always failed for this blu-ray disk. Tried cleaning the disk a lot times, did not help.

Is it possible that the bad sector on the disk is used as a way to block copying the movie to hard drive?

The only way to get out seems to be buying a new copy of the same movie as the current one was bought a while ago.

Never say never of course, but I don't think there's a bad sector on your disc as a copy protection mechanism.

Maybe your disc is irreparably damaged. It might also just be that your drive doesn't like that disc. Or somewhere in between.

It has been my experience that some drives just don't like some discs. I have three different optical drives. If a disc doesn't work in my 'main' drive, I try the others. Often, but not always, trying the disc in a different drive allows me to get a good rip. If it won't work in any of my three drives, then I clean the disc and try again, which usually fixes things.

So, try a different drive if you can. Regular blu-ray optical drives are relatively common and MakeMKV doesn't need anything special to work with most of them. UHD capable drives are less common, but they're around.
